Kiernan Strikes Gold in Victory over Manhattan

Saints Start 2-0 in MAAC for First Time Since 2014

LOUDONVILLE, NY – Sophomore Jack Kiernan brought the pot o' gold to Hickey Field on Saturday afternoon, as he notched six goals on seven shots to lead the Siena Saints to a 14-7 victory over the Manhattan Jaspers in MAAC play. With the win, the Saints are now 2-0 in MAAC play for the first time since 2014, which was a championship season for the Green and Gold.

Siena (4-2, 2-0) was paced with Kiernan's six points, while senior Mike Reilly and junior Dylan Pantalone each put up four points. Reilly scored three times and added an assist, and Pantalone scored twice and added a pair of assists. Senior Eric Munn also added three assists on the game, and graduate student goalie Aaron Lewis was solid in net as he made seven saves in taking his fourth win of the season.

Manhattan (4-4, 1-1) was led by a four point day from Parker Giarratana, as she scored a goal and tossed out three assists. Trevor Pelletier and Brandon Grinnell each scored a pair of goals, while goalie Brendan Krebs made 15 saves and scored a goal in the loss.

The Green and Gold would open the gate with a goal from Kiernan just over a minute into play. That spiraled into both sides trading goals through the quarter, as Manhattan was able to gain advantage with back-to-back goals at the 8:47 and 7:00 marks. However, a score from junior Maurice Tessier with 2:28 left on the clock evened things at 3-3 headed into the second quarter. From there, both sides played a defensive game, and both goalies stepped up, as each side only scored once to make it 4-4 at the half.

The third quarter would see the defense disappear, as Siena busted out with a 5-0 run after a tally from the Jaspers to start the half. Each of the five goals featured a different goal scorer, as Pantalone capped the run with 3:22 to play in the half to make it 9-5 Siena. With each side scoring once more before the start of the fourth, including a goal from Kiernan, the score stood 10-6 heading into the final 15 minutes.

Siena padded the lead in the final frame, as a pair of scores from Reilly, and goals from Pantalone and Kiernan stretched out the lead. The Jaspers would get a goal from Giarratana at the 7:01 mark, but Lewis would step up and make saves down the stretch as Siena would take the 14-7 win.

The Green and Gold outshot the Jaspers 49-31, including a lopsided 15-5 in the fourth quarter. Siena also won the ground ball battle 37-26, including a 12-3 mark in the fourth. Sophomore Jason Zou held his own in the faceoff circle on the day for the Saints, going 15-23 in the faceoff circle and giving Siena the advantage in that category.

The Saints will return to action next Saturday, March 23 when they head west to take on Canisius, with the opening faceoff going off at 11 a.m.
