Canisius Rallies Past Saints

First Round Bye on the Line in Sunday’s Regular Season Finale at Niagara

BUFFALO, NY – Canisius scored 14 unanswered points midway through the second half to erase a 10-point deficit and rally past Siena Basketball 68-62 at the Koessler Athletic Center. Evan Fisher led four Saints in double figures with 17 points to go along with seven rebounds.

All five starters scored in double figures for Canisius (14-16, 11-7) which clinched a top-three seed in next week's MAAC Tournament in Albany. Takal Molson led the way with 16 points and nine rebounds for the Golden Griffins which have captured 11 of the last 14 meetings between the programs including six of the past seven in Buffalo.

Jalen Pickett again fell just short in his bid for a triple-double, instead settling for his fifth double-double of the season with 11 points, a career-high 10 rebounds, and eight assists for Siena (15-15, 10-7). Kevin Degnan and Sloan Seymour added 12 points apiece for the Saints which will be the No. 4, 5 or 6-seed in the MAAC Tournament. The top-five seeds receive first round byes.

Siena scored the final seven points of a back-and-forth first half which featured five ties and four lead changes to claim a 32-28 advantage at the break. The Saints held Canisius to just 39% shooting including only 1-12 from three-point range in the opening stanza.

Siena opened as much as a 10-point cushion on two occasions in the second half, the final of which gave the Saints a 48-38 lead with 11:11 remaining. But the Golden Griffins responded with the ensuing 14 points over just 3:38 to reclaim the lead back for good at 52-48 with 6:53 to play. Canisius scored on five consecutive possessions during the run in which they were a perfect 4-4 from three after having misfired on 12 of their first 13 attempts from distance.

Seymour converted a three-point play on the ensuing possession to pull Siena back within a point, however the Griffs ultimately extended the run to 26-5 overall to take a 64-53 lead with 3:11 to go. The Saints never got any closer than two possessions the rest of the way.

Malik Johnson narrowly missed a triple-double with 10 points, nine rebounds, and 12 assists for Canisius. He assisted on 10 of the Golden Griffins' 15 second half baskets. Overall, Canisius registered 18 assists to just three turnovers. Jalanni White added 13 points for the Golden Griffins which shot 56% (15-27) in the second half.

Siena will look to bounce back and secure a First Round bye when they close out the regular season Sunday with a 2 p.m. contest at Niagara.
