Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Saints, Kmack KO Canisius in OT for Win 100

Women’s Lacrosse Remains Undefeated in MAAC Play

Sophomore Hayley Kmack made the most of Siena's first overtime game since last March, as she scored with 19 seconds remaining in the overtime period to give the Siena Saints a gutsy 17-16 victory. With the win, the Siena women's lacrosse team reached the 100 win plateau as a program. The Saints are currently in their 23rd year as a varsity program, which began in 1997.

The Saints (6-4) have now won all six of their games in the last seven. Siena has also won their last three games, matching their longest winning streak of the season.

The Green and Gold were led on offense by a six point day from junior captain Annie Brennan, who scored five goals and added an assist on the game. Sophomore Micole McNeely scored three times and added two assists, while redshirt freshman Kaitlyn Dowsett added four goals. Julia Pelcher and Kerry Gerety also added three ground balls, with Gerety also winning nine draw controls. Senior goalie Sammy Horton made six saves on the day in her sixth win of the season, tying her for the 5th most all-time in a single season.

Leading Canisius (0-10) was an eight point day from Jourdan Roemer, as she scored five times with three assists, doing it all on six shots. Roemer also led the way in the circle, tying Gerety's mark with nine draw controls. Marissa Malvaso scored four times, all coming off free position shots, while three other Golden Griffs scored a pair of goals. Goalie Lauren Gilbert made 11 saves in the loss.

Things stayed close throughout the first half, with Canisius grabbing an early 2-0 lead on a goal from Jourdan Roemer and Marissa Malvaso. Siena would bring things back even pretty quickly, as Brennan got the ball rolling at the 25:29 mark, and scoring once more at the 23:05 mark to tie up the game at 2-2. That would be the start of a 4-0 run, as Kaitlyn Dowsett and Mary Soures each scored to give Siena a 4-2 lead.

However, the Griffs wouldn't go away as they scored twice in a 50 second span from the 16:56 mark, and 16:06 mark to tie the game back up at 4-4. Both sides would trade goals the rest of the half capped by a Brennan's third goal for the Green and Gold to take an 8-7 lead. Julia Pelcher added extra cushion going into the half, breaking the trend and giving the Saints a 9-7 lead.

Things would get even crazier in the second half, as neither team could gain an inch. Despite opening the second half with a goal from Julia Pelcher and holding a three-goal lead, the Saints would give up a 3-0 run to the Golden Griffs between the 19:58 mark and 18:17 mark to tie things at 11-11. The teams would once again trade goals until Canisius tied things back at 14-14 with 8:32 to play. The Griffs would then break the pattern, taking their first lead since early in the first half when Rachel Heidenreich scored with 7:22 remaining to put Canisius on top 15-14.

Back came Brennan for Siena, as she came in clutch with a pair of goals to tie things up, and to give Siena the lead at 16-15 with 3:50 to play. However, Roemer answered back for the Griffs with 2:33 to play, tying the game at 16-16. Both sides had a chance in the final minute of regulation to score the ice breaker, as a key save from Horton gave Siena won offensive chance. The look would come just wide left from Dowsett with under three seconds to play.

In overtime, the Saints held strong on defense and was able to gain control and set up in their offensive end. Kmack would gain possession in the offense, make a move toward the net and slip a shot by Gilbert to seal the deal for Siena.

The Saints will return to action this Saturday, March 30 when they play the front end of a lacrosse doubleheader at Hickey Field. They will face Manhattan at 12 p.m., preluding the Siena men's lacrosse game at 3 p.m. against Quinnipiac.
