Redshirt freshman
Kaitlyn Dowsett provided the punch on offense on a day where goals came early and often as the Siena Saints women's lacrosse team concluded their 2019 regular season with an 18-10 win over the Marist Red Foxes on the road in Poughkeepsie. Dowsett would score five times with two assists for a team-leading seven points in the victory.
With the win, Siena (10-5, 6-2) has now finished the season with at least 10 wins for the third time in the program's 23-year history, and has tied the most MAAC wins in a single season that was set in 2005 with six. Siena has secured a top four seed in the upcoming MAAC tournament, and with a league bye on Saturday will wait and see their final finishing spot after the league slate concludes Saturday evening.
The Green and Gold would see sophomore
Nicole McNeely put up six points on two goals and four assists, while classmate
Hayley Kmack put up five points with two goals and three assists on the game. Junior
Annie Brennan, sophomores
Kerry Gerety and
Julia Pelcher, and freshman
Mary Soures all rounded out the rest of the point's getters on the day, all at least recording three points apiece. Senior
Sammy Horton made 10 saves in net in her 10
th win of the season, tying her for the most wins in a single season by a Siena goalie.
Leading Marist was Samantha Mehalick, as she scored three times for the Red Foxes. Hailey Wagner also had three points, scoring a goal with two assists. Audrey Cerrone, Kelly George, and Jana Rothman each put up two points apiece, while Devon Connolly added a goal on attack. Delaney Galvin made 12 saves in net in the loss.
Things stayed close early, as Siena broke the ice first thanks to a goal from Brennan. She would score the Saints' first two goals, as things stood 2-2 just six minutes in at the 24:06 mark. Just seconds later, Marist would retake the lead at 3-2. That would be the last lead the Red Foxes would see, as the Green and Gold would go on a 5-0 run to take a 7-3 lead. Both sides traded goals down the stretch of the first as Siena held the 9-5 lead at the halfway point.
Marist opened the second half with a pair of goals to come within striking distance at 9-7. But, Soures stepped up and began a 4-0 Siena run that saw her score twice, as Pelcher and Dowsett also scored during the run to take their largest lead, six goals, at 13-7 with 19:03 to play. Siena would only increase their lead throughout the rest of the second half, capping their scoring with a Kmack goal with 47 seconds to play in regulation.
Siena had the slight advantage on shots, 34-33 on the game, and went 18-for-19 in clears. The Green and Gold were also more effective on the ground game, winning 22 ground balls to Marist's 13.
The Saints will learn their upcoming fate on their MAAC playoff seeding after Saturday's schedule of MAAC games. Siena has clinched a spot in the upcoming tournament, and will find out if they will host a game on Saturday, April 27 or receive a first round bye.
