LOUDONVILLE, NY – Siena Baseball clinched its second straight conference series victory with a doubleheader sweep of Iona at Connors Park. The Saints took the opener 4-1 and the nightcap 3-2 in seven innings.
Game One: Siena 4, Iona 1
Tommy Miller retired 21 of the final 24 batters he faced including 15 straight during the middle innings to pitch Siena (13-26, 8-9) to the Game One win. The senior ace allowed just three hits and one unearned run while walking three and striking out seven in his third complete game effort of the season.
The Saints erased a 1-0 first inning deficit with a pair of runs in the home half of the inning on RBI singles by
Nico Ramos and
Devan Kruzinski. Siena added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth on an RBI double by
Brian Kelly, who later came into score the final run on a fielding error.
That would be more than enough offense for Miller who recorded his staff-leading fifth win of the year.
Kelly led the Saints offensively with three hits, while
Zach Durfee and
Ryan McGee added two apiece.
Game Two: Siena 3, Iona 2 (7)
Ryan McGee singled through the drawn-in infield to drive home the winning run in the bottom of the sixth as Siena completed the doubleheader sweep. With the victory, the Saints leapfrogged both Monmouth and Iona (11-30, 5-9) into the six-spot in the MAAC Standings with seven games remaining. The top-six teams qualify for the MAAC Tournament next month in Staten Island.
McGee recorded his third straight multi-hit game, while fellow freshman Kruzinski also came through clutch with a pair of hits of his own for Siena.
The teams traded runs in the first inning before McGee drove in his first run of the afternoon to put the Saints ahead 2-1 in the fourth. However, the Gaels drew even in the sixth when a fielder's choice scored Niko Switalla with the tying run.
But McGee came through for the Saints in a big spot in the sixth. With the infield in, McGee singled up the middle to plate pinch-runner
Scottie O'Bryan with the decisive run.
Iona threatened with two on and two out in the seventh, but
Dylan D'Anna came on to record the final out and earn the save.
Brendan White went the first 6.2 innings with six strikeouts to notch his third victory.
Durfee reached base three times and Kelly was hit by a pitch, as the duo extended their on-base streaks to 27 and 25 games, respectively.
Siena will look to complete the sweep and move back to .500 in the MAAC when the teams meet in the series finale Sunday. Due to the forecast of inclement weather, first pitch has been moved back to 3 p.m. with ceremonies to honor the program's eight seniors set for 2:40 p.m.
