Historic Women's Lacrosse Season Falls Just Short of Title

Top-Seed Fairfield Edges Saints in Double OT of MAAC Championship Game

FAIRFIELD, CT - The most accomplished season in Siena Women's Lacrosse history came up just short of yielding the program's first MAAC Championship. Kelly Horning scored with 33 seconds remaining in double overtime as top-seed and host Fairfield prevailed over the third-seeded Saints 10-9 in a wild MAAC Championship Game at Rafferty Stadium. Siena, which was predicted to finish seventh according to the MAAC Preseason Coaches' Poll, concludes its most decorated season with a program-record 12 wins and just its second ever championship game appearance.

Sophomore Kerry Gerety scored two goals and dished out three assists for five points, becoming the 13th player in program history to join the 100 point club. She would also set a new record for points in a single season, finishing at 72 for the season. Classmate Nicole McNeely also had a solid game, scoring a team-high four goals. The Saints would also get goals from Julia Pelcher, Kaitlyn Dowsett, and Annie Brennan. Senior goalie Sammy Horton made 11 saves, as she will finish as one of the most decorated players in program history, owning multiple career records. Gerety, Horton, and Therese Pitman all earned All-Tournament honors.

Leading Fairfield was Meaghan Graham with a four-point afternoon on a pair of goals and assists, as she provided production off the bench for the Stags. Kelly Horning would score three times, with Taylor Mitchell also scoring twice. Goalie Olivia Conquest made key saves when she needed them, stopping 14 total in the win.

Dowsett got things started early with a goal just 35 seconds into the game, as Siena took the early 1-0 lead. Both sides traded goals over the next couple of tallies as things stood 2-2 after just four minutes of play. McNeely would help the flow, as she would score back-to-back goals within a two-minute span to give Siena some cushion at 4-2. The defense from the Green and Gold through the next eight minutes would be great, as they did not allow the Stags out of their own zone, creating a trio of turnovers in a row. However, both sides would trade offense through the end of the half. Fairfield would convert on a free position attempt with 48 seconds to go in the half to tie things up at 6-6.

It would not be until almost halfway through the second half that there was a tiebreaker, as the Stags were able to get the hand up with yet another free position goal, also coming off the twig of Taylor Mitchell for the second straight time. Just minutes later, McNeely would step up and score her fourth goal of the game after grabbing her own rebound off a shot and finding the back of the net for a 7-7 score. But. Fairfield once again gained the advantage despite the push from the Saints, scoring twice in a row at the 15:08 mark, and the 11:36 mark to pull ahead by a pair.

With a third of the second half remaining, the Saints could not get anything to go on offense. That would be stifled by a second yellow card to McNeely with 9:20 left to play in the game, forcing the sophomore attacker to the sideline for the remainder of the match. Needing a spark, they would get just that from Gerety at the 4:25 mark as she scored to pull back within a goal. She would double up on that goal just 1:18 later, as she scored the game-tying goal to pull even at 9-9 with 3:08 to play. Siena would get a chance to win it at the buzzer, but Gerety's bid at three in a row rang off the post on the low shot and sent things to overtime.

Horton would make a clutch save in the first overtime half off a free position, keeping things knotted in the sudden victory period. Neither team budged in the three minutes, forcing a second  half of the overtime. Horton would come up big again on a fast break try from the Stags, keeping the ball out of the net.

But with under a minute to play, as it seemed Siena might have a chance to win it, Siena would lose the ball on what could have been called a foul, sending Fairfield back on the offensive on the failed clear. The Stags then took advantage of the space and saw Kelly Horning knot the game-winning goal for Fairfield.

Siena and Fairfield were even on shot attempts, as Fairfield won the ground game 20-15. However, Siena outplayed the Stags on the draw, winning that battle 12-10. The Saints were just 0-for-2 in the free position, while Fairfield took advantage of a 3-for-8 clip.
