The Siena women's volleyball team ended their weekend on a high note Sunday afternoon, as they fought to a 3-1 (25-23, 23-25, 25-22, 26-24) victory over the Saint Peter's Peacocks on the road. The Green and Gold have now won the last two meetings between the teams, last topping the Peacocks last season by the same final score in Loudonville.
The Saints featured a strong offense courtesy of junior
Dakota Jackson and freshman
Isabella Ultsch. Both obtained 16 kills on the match, with Ultsch topping her previous career-high mark that she set in Saturday's match against Rider. Classmate
Gracie Halley also put up a new career number, racking up 23 digs on the match.
Maddy Dunigan and
Nicole Deobler each snagged 10 kills, while defensively
Sol Guidarelli added 12 digs. Freshman
Ally-Reese Williams added 10 digs and nine kills, falling a kill short of another double-double.
Saint Peter's was led by a 19-kill effort from Angeleyshka Curbelo, and a 31 dig afternoon from Karla Seda. Alainis Alvarado added 14 kills and 11 digs for a double-double, and Wildalys Soto tossed out 37 assists and 10 digs for a double-double as well.
"That was a well earned victory on the road," said head coachÂ
Vilis Ozols. "We had so many contributors offensively and defensively and there were some great efforts off the bench."
Saint Peter's came out and opened an 8-1 lead in the first set, ultimately building a 15-5 lead early. However, the Saints chipped back into the set and came back within five points with a 19-14 score in favor of the Peacocks. Siena's 14th point opened the start of an 8-0 run, as the Green and Gold took a 21-19 lead. Both sides jostled to a 23-22 score as the Peacocks came back to take a lead after a pair of Siena miscues.
After a Saints timeout, Jackson scored a pair of kills, and a Saint Peter's attack error scored point 25 as the Saints took the 25-23 win in the set, and a 1-0 lead in the match. The script would flip in the second set, as Saint Peter's trailed 21-19 late in the second set, and would score seven of the last nine points to take the 25-23 win and tie things up at 1-1.
The third set followed the script once more, as Saint Peter's led 15-10 halfway through. The Saints once again chipped away at the deficit and used a big 6-0 run that featured two pairs of kills from
Maddy Dunigan and Deobler as the Green and Gold took a 21-17 lead. Siena would hang on, as their final four points of the set came on a Deobler kill and three Saint Peter's miscues.
The Peacocks opened the fourth set to the tune of a 12-6 lead. Saint Peter's would make the Saints work for the win, as Dunigan would make her mark in the middle scoring three kills in four Siena points that led to the Saints taking an 18-17 lead. As both sides flip flopped the lead down the stretch, a kill from
Kelly Chaney put Siena on the doorstep to take the win at a 24-23 score. But the Peacocks respoded with a point, as Curbelo tied things back up with a kill. However, Dunigan and Deobler would answer the cal with two straight kills to take the 26-24 win, and the match 3-1 for Siena.
Siena returns to the floor on Friday, Oct. 4 when they head south to Poughkeepsie to take on Marist. Opening serve in the Friday night showdown will go up at 6 p.m.
