The Siena Saints men's tennis team could not back up a win Friday night with a win on Saturday, as they had a quick turnaround to face UC Riverside on Saturday morning at Tri-City Fitness. The Green and Gold would fall by a final score of 7-0.
"We played good doubles today and have a lot of kids playing sick," said head coach
Jeff Osborn. "So it was a bit tough in singles today, but the overall energy throughout the day was good."
Despite a win at #1 doubles by sophomore
Tomas del Olmo and
Guillermo Lopez Torres by a final of 6-4, the Saints fell at #2 and #3 doubles to surrender the doubles point to UC Riverside. It would be a tough loss at #2 doubles, as
Geovanny Mendoza and
Matt Bellino almost clinched the point for the Saints before falling 7-6 (3).
In singles play, the top four singles matches all went in straight sets, while #5 singles and #6 singles went the distance in three sets. At #5 singles, freshman
Marvin Oberli used a comeback in set two to force a third set using a 6-4 win in the second set after losing by that score in the first. However, UC Riverside's Jayson Blando would top Oberli 10-7 in set three for the win. Fellow freshman
Matt Nardone also forced three sets, falling in the final two after taking a first set win 6-2.
The Saints return to action tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 16 when they head over to Connecticut to take on the UConn Huskies. The match will have the first serve go up at 11 a.m.
