For the first time in program history, the Siena Saints men's tennis team came up with victory in Storrs, Connecticut as they defeated the UConn Huskies by a close 4-3 final score. With the win, the Saints end the weekend winning two of three matchups as they relied on their youth.
"I am happy for freshman
Marvin Oberli who gets MVP of the day," said head coach
Jeff Osborn. "He has worked so hard to get in the lineup and came up big for us today clinching the W. We had a great weekend of tennis, and I feel the guys the past two years and are playing with a lot of confidence. We will continue to work hard and push forward.
Oberli would be the clinching point at #5 singles after the Saints took a hard earned doubles point to open the day.
Tomas del Olmo and
Guillermo Lopez Torres set the tone at #1 doubles with a commanding 6-3 win. Needing a second doubles win to clinch the point, it would come at #3 doubles as
Sagar Bains and
Matt Nardone edged out a tough 7-5 result to give Siena the 1-0 lead.
At the top of the lineup in singles play, del Olmo came through with his second victory of the day winning in straight sets 6-4, 7-6 (3) to put the Green and Gold up 2-0. #4 singles featuring
Geovanny Mendoza would be the next victory as he also won in a hard fought 6-3, 7-6 (6) victory. Needing the fourth point, Oberli would come through with the 6-2, 6-2 win to stymie a UConn late charge.
The Saints return to action tomorrow, Friday, Feb. 20 when they return to Tri-City Fitness to take on the Colgate Raiders. Opening serve kicks things off at 5:45 p.m.
