Jordan King fueled a late 14-2 run with a pair of clutch threes as Siena Basketball rallied past Fairfield 62-59 at Alumni Hall. The Saints overcame an eight-point second half deficit to post their fifth straight victory to mark the program's longest winning streak in a decade.
Trailing 51-46 following a Vincent Eze basket with 6:27 remaining,
Manny Camper and King knocked down consecutive triples to put Siena (15-10, 11-5) back on top for good 52-51 with 5:09 to play. The Saints scored nine unanswered as reserve
Sammy Friday IV followed with a three-point play of his own, before King capped the decisive rally with another huge three to stake Siena to a 60-53 lead with 1:55 remaining.
Fairfield (11-16, 7-9) hung tight in a game which featured six ties and 10 lead changes. The Stags chipped away, but Landon Taliaferro's look at the potential tying three at the buzzer was off the mark as the Saints held on to capture the first meeting between the programs on Fairfield's campus in 19 years. Elijah Burns scored a game-high 15 points on 5-7 shooting for Siena whose five-game winning streak is the school's longest since a program-record 15-game win streak from Dec. 23, 2009 – Feb. 8, 2010.
Jalen Pickett added 14 points, five assists, and a season-high three blocks for the Saints who have won eight of nine overall to maintain their second place position in the MAAC Standings a half-game back of Saint Peter's.
Eze scored 14 points and added eight rebounds for the Stags who remained in a four-way tie for sixth place in the MAAC Standings, as all four teams lost Sunday. Taj Benning added 11 points for Fairfield who saw their four-game winning streak at Alumni Hall snapped.
In a back-and-forth first half in which neither team led by more than two possessions, the Stags took a 32-27 lead at the break. Siena shot just 36% from the field and committed 11 turnovers in the opening stanza as Fairfield held a 14-0 advantage in points off turnovers in the half.
The Stags ultimately opened as much as a 41-33 lead with 15:22 remaining, but the Saints' timely shooting and strong defense kick started the rally down the stretch. Siena shot 53% in the second half, while holding Fairfield to just 31% in another strong defensive showing. The Saints' much-improved defense has now allowed just 58.7 points on 38.7% shooting over the team's last nine wins.
Camper posted his 12
th double-double of the season, scoring 11 of his 13 points in the second half while adding 10 rebounds for Siena who secured their second straight regular season series sweep of the Stags and third in four years. Camper converted on all eight of his free throw attempts for the Saints who were 20-23 (87%) from the charity stripe to pull out the tight road win.
Siena, which is in the midst of a stretch where it plays four of its final five regular season games on the road, returns to Connecticut Wednesday to continue its three-game road trip at Quinnipiac at 7 p.m.
