Siena Baseball posted season-highs in both runs and hits, but came up short in a 13-10 defeat in a series-opening slugfest at Eastern Kentucky.
Jonathan Crimmin and
Zach Durfee each reached base safely five times for the Saints who pounded out 14 hits and worked 11 walks.
Nick Howie had three hits, knocked in three runs, and stole a pair of bases for Eastern Kentucky (5-2). The Colonels had 14 hits of their own, and were a perfect 7-7 in stolen base attempts.
Crimmin went 3-4 with a pair of RBI, while Durfee added a pair of hits, two runs scored, and three walks for Siena (0-9) who had entered play having scored just 19 runs over their first eight games of the season.
Jake Hall and
Ryan McGee each added three-hit performances for the Saints, with Hall also scoring three times.
Siena trailed 4-1 through two innings and 6-3 through four. But the Saints rallied back with a three-run fifth on an RBI double by Hall, a bases loaded walk by
Devan Kruzinski, and a fielder's choice.
Eastern Kentucky went back on top in the seesaw slugfest 8-6 in the home half of the fifth, however Siena responded with its second straight three-run inning to claim a 9-8 lead in the sixth. Crimmin delivered the game-tying two-run double, while Hall scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.
But the Colonels scored four unanswered runs in the seventh to reclaim the lead for good. A two-run error followed by a two-run single by Howie put EKU in front 12-9.
Still down three in their final at-bat, the Saints worked the bases loaded with two outs but couldn't cash in.
The teams continue their four-game weekend series tomorrow at noon.
