BOONE, NC – Siena Baseball (0-17) wrapped up a two-day mid-week series at Appalachian State with a tough loss Wednesday morning in Boone, NC. The Saints held multiple leads, but ultimately fell to the Mountaineers, 9-8, at Jim & Bettie Smith Field.
Looking to rebound from Tuesday's 7-5 falter, Siena pulled out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, with junior Pat O'Hare doubling to right field to send in sophomore Devan Kruzinski and sophomore Ryan McGee plating O'Hare on an RBI single. Junior Tim Carroll sent O'Hare around the bases again in the top of the third with an RBI double of his own.
The Saints' lead held as the Mountaineers' offense woke up in the bottom half of the frame, with the home team using a sacrifice fly and an RBI single to pull within a run at 3-2. Sophomore Alex Milone gave the saints more distance in the top of the fourth, scoring freshman Bryce Mordecki with an RBI ground out.
With the Saints leading, 4-2, App State mounted a seven-run comeback through the eighth inning to jump out to a 9-4 advantage. The Mountaineers used a single and a double in the fourth innings, a one-bagger in the fifth, a sacrifice fly and a triple in the sixth, and one more single and double apiece in the seventh to get in the driver's seat.
Siena proved to have one more comeback left in them, scoring the final four runs of the ballgame to come within one. Senior Jonathan Crimmin launched an RBI double to left field that scored classmate Yasser Santana and Kruzinski in the eighth, while Carroll record on a fielder's choice to allow O'Hare to cross for the third time. Crimmin finally scored off a bases-loaded walk from Mordecki later in the inning.
Siena ended the eighth inning with the bases loaded and could not send a pair home in the ninth to complete their potential comeback. Following three no-decision innings from junior Jordan Walden, classmate Jayden Metz (0-1) took the loss over the next four frames, allowing seven runs on as many hits and walking four. Freshman Will Hearn rounded out the game for the Saints with a perfect inning that included a pair of strikeouts. App State's Andrew Papp (1-0) picked up the win with 2.2 scoreless innings, while Jack Hartman (4) earned the save.
Siena will next head to Athens, Ohio to take on Ohio University in a four-game set, March 13-15. First pitch in Friday's action is set for 4 PM.
