After defeating Big East foe St. John's last year at home on Hickey Field, the Red Storm returned the favor on their own turf Saturday afternoon as they used an 8-0 run between the second and third quarter to defeat the Green and Gold by a final score of 16-9. With the loss, the Saints move back to 2-3 on the season.
The Red Storm saw Mike Madsen score a seven point day, as he netted six goals with an assist on 17 shots. Joe Madsen would score three times, and Jonathan Huber, Ryan Schaeffer, and Ricardo Carreras each scored twice. In net, Brody Agres would make nine saves in the win.
Siena was led by a five point day from junior
Jack Kiernan, as he scored three times with a pair of assists. Senior
Dylan Pantalone and sophomore
George Rusnak each put up two points apiece, as Rusnak scored twice and Pantalone scored a goal and assist.
The Saints rolled to an early 4-0 lead in the first five minuntes of play. Kiernan struck first just 30 seconds into the game, followed by goals from Pantalone, Rusnak, and junior
Brendan Lantieri. Despite a pair of Red Storm goals in the first quarter, Kiernan would get a score sandwiched inbetween for a 5-2 Saints lead after the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the wheels began to fall off for the Saints as Saint John's scored a pair of quick goals to make it three unanswered, as they pulled within a goal at 5-4. Sophomore
Christian Watts would break up the trio of goals at the time, scoring at the 11:23 mark in the second quarter to give Siena a 6-4 lead.
That would be the last lead the Saints would have, as from the 11:08 mark in the second quarter to the 7:14 mark in the third quarter, St. John's would run off an 8-0 run to jump ahead 12-6. A goal from
Brett Habich would stop the run, but the Red Storm were able to keep their foot on the gas through the final whistle.
The Saints return to action this Thursday, March 10 for their first quick turn around of the season as they return home to Hickey Field. They play host to the Fairfield Stags, with the opening faceoff getting things started at 3 p.m.
