Siena Student Athletes Achieve Record-Setting Year Academically

LOUDONVILLE, NY – While the 2019-20 school year proved to be historic for its unprecedented challenges, Siena College student athletes persevered in an equally unparalleled way to achieve record-setting academic success. For the third consecutive year, Siena Athletics set a new department record with a total of 210 student athletes earning Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Academic Honor Roll recognition for maintaining a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better.

The MAAC set a conference-record with 2,722 student athletes named to the Academic Honor Roll, with an additional 90 E-Sports students honored as well. To be eligible to be named to the MAAC Academic Honor Roll, a student athlete must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher at the conclusion of the academic year, and must have matriculated at least one full academic year at their current institution. The MAAC Academic Honor Roll recognizes student athletes from all 11 of the conference's full-time members, as well as all 17 associate members, representing all 24 sports in which the league crowns champions.

"In an unprecedented year of sports, it's nice to see that academics were still at the forefront at all of our institutions," said MAAC Commissioner Rich Ensor. "I'd like to congratulate all of the student athletes who put in the hard work on and off the field. This record number of Academic Honor Roll recipients is a true testament to their, as well as their institutions, commitment to excellence."

Siena's record 210 MAAC Academic Honor Roll selections shatters last year's previous benchmark of 172. A total of 62% of Siena's 338 student athletes received acclaim, marking a seven-percent increase from 2018-19. An additional 14 Siena College students who compete in E-sports, which was recognized as an official MAAC club sport this past year, were also named to the MAAC Academic Honor Roll, two of whom also received recognition as varsity student athletes.

"Siena student athletes never flinch at adversity, but instead revel in the challenge," noted Margaret E. Madden, Ph.D., Siena College Provost. "This spring, the pandemic unexpectedly jolted their learning environment. The student athletes deftly adjusted to remote instruction, and shattered last year's record for academic excellence. Their success is the result of a winning approach, and it's a tribute to the coaches and staff who vigorously support their academic pursuits."

The men's soccer squad led all Siena Athletics programs with a team-record 25 MAAC Academic Honor Roll selections, comprising more than 83% of their roster. The women's lacrosse team boasted 24 honorees – 86% of its roster – while women's soccer sported a department-high 92% of its roster achieving MAAC Academic Honor Roll recognition with 22 selections.

"Congratulations to our student athletes on an exceptional year academically," remarked Siena College Vice President and Director of Athletics John D'Argenio. "Despite being faced with unprecedented challenges, our Saints marched on in the face of adversity to reveal their true character, and I am delighted to share with them in celebrating their unparalleled academic successes."

Overall, Siena student athletes achieved a department-record 3.30 cumulative GPA through the conclusion of the 2019-20 academic year, marking an eight-percent improvement from the end of 2018-19. Women's lacrosse leads the way with a 3.60 cumulative team GPA, while the men's cross country/track program paces all men's squads with a 3.42 mark.

A record 53 student athletes were named to the athletic department's "4.0 Club" for achieving an unblemished GPA during either or both the Fall 2019 and/or Spring 2020 semester, more than doubling last year's total of 24. Eight student athletes earned 4.0 Club recognition in both semesters.

"To say that I'm proud of our student athletes would be an understatement," explained S.A.IN.T.S. Advisor Sarah Sivertson. "Our student athletes' success this past year attests to their dedication in the classroom, and proves that hard work pays off even in the midst of arguably their most challenging semester to date."

Siena student athletes capped an historic year academically by posting a remarkable 3.47 GPA during the most recent Spring 2020 semester, which was eight points higher than all non-student athletes. Most notably, all 21 Siena Athletics programs recorded a team GPA of 3.0 or better during the spring, with women's soccer leading the way with a stellar 3.77 mark. Men's soccer led all men's teams with a 3.62 GPA during the spring.

The announcement of the record-shattering MAAC Academic Honor Roll numbers and outstanding GPA data punctuates a banner 2019-20 academic year for Siena College Athletics. For the fourth consecutive year, Siena College was at the head of the MAAC with seven athletic programs (men's cross country, men's golf, men's tennis, men's track, women's cross country, women's golf, and women's track) garnering NCAA Public Recognition Awards for achieving Academic Progress Rates (APR) in the top-10 percent of their respective sports nationally. Siena Athletics also posted a 92% Graduation Success Rate in the latest NCAA Report, eclipsing the Division I record-setting average of 89% by three points. Siena has boasted a GSR of 90% or higher in all 15 NCAA reports since the first rate was released in 2005.

Other notable team academic achievements during the 2019-20 school year included the men's basketball squad earning an NABC Team Academic Excellence Award for the first time ever, and men's indoor and outdoor track (20), women's lacrosse (16), women's soccer (16), men's soccer (15), and men's lacrosse (11) each setting program records for the number of MAAC All-Academic Team selections earned.
