LOUDONVILLE, NY – Siena Women's Soccer held one of the nation's most potent offenses without a shot on target in a remarkable team defensive effort as the Saints secured a key 1-0 victory over Quinnipiac on Senior Day at Hickey Field. Senior captains
Emily McNelis and
Carrie Krohn connected on the decisive goal for the Saints who've won four of their last five matches.
All nine seniors started and left their marks on a memorable Senior Day, which saw Siena (7-7-1, 5-2) pull into a three-way tie for second place in the MAAC Standings with both Quinnipiac (10-3, 5-2) and Niagara at 15 points with three league matches remaining. The Saints handed the nation's 21
st ranked scoring offense (2.67) just their second shutout all season, while also snapping the Bobcats' five-match win streak during which time they had outscored their opposition by a 14-1 margin.
McNelis and Krohn wasted no time on starting the celebration early, combining for the only score the Saints would need just 5:37 into the match. Krohn found a cutting McNelis who finished across through traffic from just outside the top of the 18, tucking her team-leading fifth goal of the season just past the outstretched keeper and inside the far-right post. The assist was the seventh this fall for Krohn, pulling her into a tie for third most in the MAAC. Meanwhile, the goal marked just the second bequeathed by the Bobcats in their past six matches, for a team which entered play with a 0.66 team goals against average overall.
Quinnipiac had its best chance to equalize shortly thereafter, drawing already their seventh penalty kick of the season in the 14
th minute. But Selena Salas, who had converted on five of their first six attempts, drew iron this time in clanging her look off the post.
Siena was able to batten down the hatches thereafter in a defensive stalemate which saw the teams combine for just four second half shots. Overall, the Bobcats harbored narrow advantages in both shots (8-7) and corners (4-3). The Saints limited the nation's sixth leading goal scorer Rebecca Cooke to only one shot, while the eight total shots surrendered were a season-best for a Siena defense which entered play allowing an average of 16.1 shots per match.
Leslie Adams did not need to make an official save in recording her first clean sheet of the season, coming on her Senior Day. Sofia Lospinoso made three saves for the Bobcats, while allowing just her second goal in more than 500 minutes of action this season.
Siena concludes its season-long three-match homestand with its final regular season match in Loudonville when the Saints host Manhattan Wednesday at 3 p.m.
