Second Half Strike Lifts Men’s Soccer Over Manhattan

Saints 1-1 in MAAC Play By Way of Goal in 60th minute

RIVERDALE, NY – Siena Men's Soccer (5-4-1) used a balanced attack to register its second shutout of the Fall 2021 season in a 1-0 win over MAAC foe Manhattan Saturday afternoon at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, New York.

Following a scoreless first half which saw the Jaspers hold a 6-1 lead in shots, the Saints found their chance to take the lead in the 60th minute when freshman Erik Reis grounded a long pass to sophomore Nick Fernandes to pass to classmate Bilal Hersi, who put it away on the right side of the box for his third goal of the season.

The Saints were able to defend against 10 Manhattan shot attempts thanks to the efforts of senior goalkeeper Greg Monroe, who made four saves in his seventh career shutout and 16th career victory in-goal, tying him for the fifth-most wins in program history among goalkeepers.

The Saints' six shots in the win came from five different players, while the visitors held a 9-8 corner kicks advantage. Siena has now outscored opponents, 10-4, in the second half of games, despite being outscored by the same margin in the first half. The victory gives the Green and Gold their first winning record through 10 matches since 2009.

After completing a two-match road trip to begin conference play, Siena will return home for a pair of matches at Hickey Field, beginning against Saint Peter's on Wednesday, October 6 at 3 PM.
