LOUDONVILLE, NY – Returning home to continue MAAC play inside the friendly confines of Hickey Field, Siena Men's Soccer (6-4-1, 2-1) outlasted conference rival Saint Peter's (3-7-0, 1-2) to gain its second consecutive win in shutout fashion. The Saints scored the golden goal in the 95
th minute to cap a 1-0 overtime win over the Peacocks and continue what is now their best start through 11 matches since 1998.
Beginning a stretch in which four of six matches will be played at home, the Saints battled the Peacocks for possession during regulation, with each squad getting its share of chances in the open field and on set piece opportunities. The Saints walked out of the win with 14-10 shot and 6-1 corner kick advantages, with the visitors having to wait until the 78
th minute of play for their first corner try.
Embarking on their fourth overtime contest of the season, the Saints struck gold in the 95
th minute, when freshman defender
Henrik Winkelmann headed in a ball over the head of the keeper in the box that had been started on a relay from classmates
Thomas Storodegard and
Frederic Storodegard for his first career goal. The win gave the Saints their second in the last three tries over the Peacocks and a mark of 4-1-1 over their last six matches.
Siena continued its diverse offensive campaign with eight different Saints registering a shot and freshman
Jacob Sandun Arachchige-Jensen leading the way with three attempts. Winkelmann became the team's 13
th different point scorer of the season with his game-winner. Senior goalkeeper
Greg Monroe registered his eighth career shutout and 17
th win in-goal in the Green and Gold, tying him for the fourth-most victories all-time among Siena keepers.
The team's 6-4-1 start is now its best through 11 matches since the 1998 campaign, which saw the team post a program record 11 wins and finish 7-1 at home. Siena is 2-1 to start MAAC play for the first time since 2018 and has accumulated its most wins in a single season since 2016, with seven more regular season contests still on the schedule.
