Saints Hang Ten on Iona

Women’s Soccer Posts 10th Straight Win Over Gaels, and Third in Past Sixth Months

LOUDONVILLE, NY – Ashleigh Sarafin scored the decisive goal in the 82nd minute and Siena Women's Soccer hung on late to secure its 10th straight win over Iona with a 3-2 victory at Hickey Field. Rebecca Rolland and Annie Bagnall added goals for the Saints who also defeated the Gaels for the third time in just the past sixth months in Loudonville.

Siena (4-6-1, 2-1) posted its highest scoring output this fall to bounce back from the program's first league loss since the 2019 season finale. The Saints have now outscored the Gaels by a 26-7 margin during their double-digit series win streak.

Siena claimed a 2-0 lead at the break, converting on each of their first two corner kick attempts. Rolland opened the scoring in the ninth minute with her second goal of the year, finishing a third attempt in tight after the Saints' initial two shots were blocked. Bagnall then doubled the advantage in the 30th minute, heading a corner from Lexi Bartlow just across the goal line.

Iona (5-6, 1-3) mostly controlled second half action in a match where the Gaels held a 16-13 shot margin. Iona came out strong, with Samantha Hogan halving the deficit less than four minutes into the stanza.

Siena would cling to a 2-1 lead late before a long free-kick was miss-headed by a defender, which Sarafin corralled and blasted home for a key insurance goal. The score would also prove to be the game-winner, as Kiera Haggerty responded with just 2:59 remaining for the Gaels.

But the Saints were able to hang on to also run their home unbeaten streak vs. Iona to 12 straight (10-0-2) dating back to the turn of the century. Brooke Boermeester made four saves to secure her third win in goal this fall.

Siena hits the road next week for a pair of matches, beginning with the annual Western New York trip when the Saints head to Canisius Wednesday for a 4 p.m. kickoff.
