Siena struck for three first half goals en route to a 3-1 victory over Canisius in Buffalo.
Katrina Kurtz,
Emily McNelis, and
Carrie Krohn all scored for the reigning MAAC Champions who improved to 3-1 in conference action.
A four-goal first half bonanza spanning exactly 25 minutes accounted for all the scoring Wednesday afternoon, as Siena (5-6-1, 3-1) finished on the positive end and tied a season-high with its second straight three-goal effort.
Kurtz opened the scoring in the 16
th minute, ripping a highlight reel rocket from more than 40 yards out over the unsuspecting keeper. McNelis doubled the advantage just six minutes later, as Krohn threaded the needle through the heart of the defense to her fellow senior captain. The goal, which proved to be the game-winner, was the team-high fourth for McNelis, while Krohn corralled her team-leading sixth assist.
Canisius (0-9-2, 0-5) halved the deficit less than four minutes later on a Luca Fahmer header off a corner to make it 2-1 Saints in the 26
th minute. But McNelis and Krohn connected again to put it away, with McNelis returning the favor to set up Krohn for her first goal of the season in the 41
st minute to cap the scoring.
The Golden Griffins held a 20-10 shot advantage – including an 11-3 margin in the second half – but
Leslie Adams made a season-high nine saves for the Saints who posted their fifth straight win over Canisius and ninth in the past 10 meetings. Despite being out-shot, Siena was remarkably efficient offensively, putting all 10 of their shots on target.
Jessica Jones made seven saves for the Golden Griffins who've dropped eight straight.
The Saints return to action Saturday when they make the short trip down I-87 to Poughkeepsie to battle MAAC rival Marist at 7 p.m.
