LOUDONVILLE, NY – The Siena Volleyball team took care of business on Saturday afternoon, as the Green and Gold defeated the Saint Peter's Peacocks by a final score of 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-21). With the win, the Saints have now won three straight matches, and nine straight sets going back to last weekend's 3-1 win over Manhattan.
"I was very proud of the way the team played today," said head coach
Vilis Ozols. "Saint Peter's is scrappy and comes at you from so many different angles after playing great defense, and I thought our team did a beautiful job of stabilizing and regrouping in transition for quality attack opportunities."
Leading the Saints were two standout offensive performances from graduate student
Emily Wunder and freshman
Sara Wagner. Wagner came away with a match-high 11 kills, while Wunder added 10 kills. Wunder also added five assisted blocks to her afternoon resume, as
Maddy Dunigan also had five assisted blocks to pair with her nine kills. Junior
Gracie Halley led the defense with 16 digs.
Saint Peter's had Alanis Alvarado score eight total kills to lead the offense, with libero Charlie Cordts adding 18 digs defensively. The Peacocks struggled offensively, hitting just .079 on the afternoon.
Siena found their stride midway through the first set, with the score 9-8 Siena they would put up a 6-0 run to go up 15-8. However, Saint Peter's clawed their way back into the set, pulling even at 20-all. Both sides played to a 23-23 before Siena captured the final two points.
The Green and Gold pulled away early in the second set, scoring up to a 15-5 lead. However, Saint Peter's continued to play hard, pulling within five points at 24-19 before an attack error gave Siena the 25-19 win to go up 2-0. It would then be a hard fought third set, as Saint Peter's pushed the Saints as the Green and Gold led the whole way. Dunigan would supply the final kill, giving Siena the 25-21 win to take the third and final set.
The Saints return to action tomorrow, Sunday, Oct. 31 when the Green and Gold end their weekend with a matchup against the Rider Broncs at 1 p.m.
