LOUDONVILLE, NY – Senior captain
Carrie Krohn struck for a pair of first half goals as reigning MAAC Champion and No. 4 seed Siena Women's Soccer opened postseason play with an impressive 2-0 triumph over fifth-seeded Iona in the MAAC Quarterfinals at Hickey Field.
Brooke Boermeester made two saves to record her third shutout for the Saints, who won their fifth straight quarterfinal and advance to the MAAC Semifinals for the sixth time in the past seven seasons.
Following the completion of the quarterfinal round – and the ensuing reseeding of the tournament – Siena (9-9-1) will head to Connecticut to take on No. 2 seed Quinnipiac in the MAAC Semifinals Thursday. The Bobcats also advanced Sunday with a 1-0 win over seventh-seeded Marist.
Krohn bookended the first half with her third and fourth goals, respectively, in four matches vs. Iona (11-8) this calendar year. The Saints defeated the Gaels all four times in a span of just seven months and six days during an unprecedented 2021 – including a pair of MAAC Quarterfinals victories – while outscoring Iona by a 14-2 margin. All four matches were played at Hickey Field.
Krohn opened the scoring in the 10
th minute following a perfectly executed throw-in.
Grace George in-bounded to
Jayanna Monds who one-touched a cross from the right which Krohn volleyed inside the near right post.
Krohn then capped her second career multi-goal effort – both of which have come against the Gaels – with an insurance tally with just 2:38 remaining before the half.
Annie Bagnall deflected a long free kick into the box out right which
Emily McNelis centered to Krohn who roofed home the score.
Siena held a 9-8 shot margin and an 8-4 corner kick advantage in securing their 11
th straight win overall vs. Iona, while also running their home unbeaten streak against the Gaels to 13 in a row (11-0-2).
Emma Havrilla made just one save for Iona which had allowed just one goal total – a penalty kick – during their six-match win streak entering play. Andrea Ferrer and Kiera Haggerty registered two shots apiece for the Gaels who are winless over their last 11 postseason matches (0-10-1). Iona has been outscored 30-3 in Tournament action since winning the first-ever MAAC Women's Soccer Championship in 1992.
The Saints will now shift their sights to Quinnipiac, whom Siena defeated 1-0 on Senior Day on Oct. 16 in Loudonville behind a sixth minute goal from McNelis.
