WASHINGTON, DC - Siena Basketball faces another challenging early-season test when the Saints take on defending BIG EAST Tournament Champion Georgetown Friday night at 6:30 p.m. at Capital One Arena in the nation's capital.
Siena (0-3) is set to see a pair of familiar faces tonight against Georgetown (1-1). Hoyas Assistant Coach Louis Orr served as the head coach of the Saints for the 2000-01 season, leading Siena to a 20-11 overall record and a MAAC Co-Regular Season Championship in his lone season at the helm. Head coach
Carmen Maciariello played his only season at Siena under the direction of Orr. Meanwhile, Georgetown guard Donald Carey was a member of the Saints from 2018-20. In his lone season suiting up for the Saints, Carey averaged 11.3 points in 30 games (28 starts) while helping guide Siena to the 2019-20 MAAC Regular Season and Tournament Championship.
Tonight's matchup serves as another stiff test for the Saints to open their 2021-22 season. Siena played its first three games against conference preseason favorites in nationally ranked St. Bonaventure, Delaware, and Yale, and tonight's opponent, Georgetown, is the reigning BIG EAST Tournament Champion. The Saints conclude their grueling season-opening five-game stretch Monday at the Times Union Center when they host Ivy League preseason No. 2 Harvard.
Siena and Georgetown meet for the seventh time, albeit the first time in 47 years. The Saints hold a 4-2 advantage in the all-time series, which saw the programs meet five times in a six-year span from 1949-55. The Hoyas captured the most recent meeting 70-56 on Jan. 31, 1974 here in Washington, DC. Both legendary Siena Head Coach Bill Kirsch and Georgetown Head Coach John Thompson were each in their second seasons leading their respective programs.
