Women’s Basketball Downed at Lafayette in Defensive Tussle

Siena Bested in Fourth Quarter of First Meeting with Leopards

EASTON, PA – Siena Women's Basketball (0-3) once again came down to the wire in search of its first win of the 2021-22 season, but could not hold on to a late lead in the first-ever meeting with Patriot League foe Lafayette (1-3) Saturday evening. The Saints' offensive woes continued in the 49-44 loss to the Leopards at the Kirby Sports Center in Easton, Pennsylvania.

Competing in its third of four scheduled road games to begin the year, the Green and Gold played to its largest lead of the season thus far during the first half, and held an 18-11 halftime advantage. Lafayette would outscore the Saints, 21-12, in the third quarter and 17-14 down the stretch, taking the lead for good at the 3:36 mark in the fourth quarter to pull away. Siena came within one position a handful of times during the final minutes of the game, but trips to the free throw line for the home team kept the lead out of reach.

Senior Margo Peterson connected on four of the team's six made three-point shots to lead the way with 16 points and six rebounds, securing her first double-figure scoring effort of the year. Rayshel Brown added nine points and four boards, while freshman Valencia Fontenelle-Posson scored six straight points in the second quarter en-route to a season-best nine points and six rebounds.

Despite making a season-high six three-point shots, Siena shot only 25 percent from the field and went 6-19 from the charity stripe, while Lafayette shot 36 percent from the field and held a 44-43 rebound advantage. Siena also recorded a season-best 12 steals while turning the ball over a season-low 15 times. Lafayette featured three players in double-figures, with junior Jessica Booth's career-high 19 points leading the way.

Siena will soon have another chance to gain its first win of the season when it travels to Durham, New Hampshire to face the University of New Hampshire in a 1 PM matinee on Tuesday, November 23.
