Men’s Soccer Victorious to End Regular Season

Saints Extend Unbeaten Streak to Four with 2-1 Win over Monmouth

LOUDONVILLE, NY – Looking to continue momentum from three successful results, Siena Men's Soccer (9-6-3) put itself in position to host a postseason match for the second time in program history Wednesday afternoon. The Saints ended the Fall 2021 regular season with a 2-1 defeat of defending MAAC Champion Monmouth at Hickey Field, extending its win streak to three and unbeaten streak to four.

Closing out a run of three of the final four matches of the regular season at home, Siena completed the Fall 2021 slate with its most total wins since 2014, best conference mark (5-3-2) since 2016, and best mark at home (6-1-2) since 2014. In only his second season at the helm of the program, head coach Graciano Brito guided a program picked to finish 10th in the MAAC Preseason Coaches Poll to a top-5 league finish. Entering the MAAC Tournament, the Saints have outscored their opponents, 9-2, over the last three matches.

The Green and Gold got on the board in the 20th minute, with freshman defender Erik Reis netting his first career goal following a header volley from classmate Henrik Winkelman that began with a corner kick from freshman Jacob Sandun Arachchige-Jensen. Following an equalizer from the Hawks in the 31st minute, freshman Zach Gardner gave the Saints back a lead that they would not relinquish in the 41st minute with a strike following passes from sophomore Cole Hellert and freshman Jesper Schone Vogtengen. Siena edged Monmouth with a 10-8 shots advantage, while each team drew five corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper Greg Monroe made three saves en-route to moving into a tie for the second-most winningest goalkeeper in program history with his 20th career victory in-between-the-pipes.

Following the conclusion of the remaining slate of action across the MAAC, Siena locked up the number four seed in the 2021 MAAC Men's Soccer Tournament, and will host a postseason match for only the second time ever and the first time since 2016. The Saints will welcome number five-seeded Rider to Hickey Field in the MAAC Quarterfinals on Sunday, November 7, with the time and other details surrounding the match forthcoming.
