The Siena Women's Basketball program heads to the Carrier Dome in Syracuse as they take on the Syracuse University Orange on Wednesday afternoon. The game will be the final non-conference game of the season for the Saints, resuming MAAC play after the holiday.
The Saints (0-9) look to bounce back after a loss on Monday evening, as they struggled early against the Rider Broncs, as they would fall by a final score of 59-43 in their MAAC opener at the UHY Center. Fifth-year
Rayshel Brown led all Siena scorers, putting up 12 points on a 5-for-9 night from the floor. Brown also added five rebounds, two assists, and two steals to her stat line. Senior
Margo Peterson scored eight points, while classmate
Amari Anthony scored six points. As a team, the Saints would force 25 Rider turnovers on the night.
Siena and Syracuse meet for the 12
th time in their histories, with the Orange holding a 6-5 advantage over the Saints. Head Coach
Jim Jabir faced Syracuse twice during his previous tenure with Siena, snagging one win back on Dec. 6, 1989 in a 62-43 defeat of the Orange at the UHY Center. His one loss at Siena came at the Carrier Dome during the 1987-88 season. His last head coaching victory over the Orange came on Feb. 9, 2002 in an 80-70 win while at Providence.
The last time the two teams met was the opening game of the 2016-17 season, as the Saints opened in dramatic fashion as they faced the 2016 NCAA Runners-up. The then-#14/13 ranked Syracuse picked up the victory with a 102-65 win over the Saints.
Jackie Benitez set a career-high seven three-pointers made to total 21 points , which was a game-high. Denisha Petty-Evans added 13 points as she went four-for-seven from the field. Kollyns Scarbrough led the Saints with seven rebounds, five being defensive. Deja Rawls dished out four of Siena's 15 assists. Siena out-shot Syracuse from the three-point line. The Saints shot 45.8 while the Orange shot 30.6 percent.
The Orange (8-4) are coming off a huge win over UMBC on Saturday morning, as they topped the Terriers by a final of 82-50. They are currently on a six-game winning streak, which has included a victory over #18/20 ranked Ohio State by as final of 97-91. This matchup with the Saints will be their final non-conference game before starting ACC play on Dec. 30 at North Carolina.
