Women’s Hoops Falls at Saint Peter’s

Saints Drop Opening Game, Look to Bounce Back Sunday

Graduate student Isis Young would go on to score a game-high 26 points on Friday afternoon as the Siena Women's Basketball team would fall to the Saint Peter's Peacocks by a final score of 66-58 at the John J. Moore Athletics Center on the campus of New Jersey City University.

Young's 26 points would be the second most points scored in a single-game this season, trailing only her 28 point effort at Monmouth. Junior Margo Peterson would nab 13 points as the other Saint in double-figured. Junior Lala Watts would be strong on the boards, setting a new career-high with 14 rebounds.

Saint Peter's was led by a 19-point effort from redshirt senior Taiah Thornton. Thornton also added seven assists, six steals, and five rebounds to her stat line. Freshman Ajia James also finished in double figures with 10 points and 13 rebounds while also grabbing three assists and a pair of steals. The Peacocks would take advantage of 19 Siena turnovers, turning them into 24 total points on the game.

After a rough start in the first quarter that saw the Peacocks score 27 points and a half-court buzzer beater in the first quarter, the Saints came out and put up a 13-0 run to start the second quarter. Peterson would hit a three-pointer with 4:49 to play to give Siena a one-point lead, 29-27. Saint Peter's would grab the lead back after a couple quick buckets, and take a five-point lead into the half.

In the third quarter, it didn't take long for the Saints to grab the lead once more, as Peterson would be the one to hit the shot again. Her three-pointer with 7:50 to play in the quarter gave Siena a one-point lead once again, 39-38. But once again, the Peacocks bounced back and opened up an eight point lead by the end of the quarter.

The Peacocks would continue to lead by as many as eight points with six minutes to play. From there, Siena would turn up the heat as Young caught a hot hand. She would score nine consecutive points, capped by a three-pointer, to close the Saint Peter's lead to just one point with 2:32 to play. But, a late 9-0 run by Saint Peter's would combat the effort through the final buzzer.

The Saints will return to action tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 27 in the second game of the weekend series against the Peacocks. Tip-off for the contest is set for 4 PM at the John J. Moore Athletics Center on the campus of New Jersey City University.
