The Siena Saints Women's Lacrosse team went to battle with the Niagara Purple Eagles on Sunday afternoon, as both sides put out high-powered offense. Niagara would gain the advantage at the final whistle, topping the Saints by a score of 14-13.
Siena was led by a trio of hat tricks, coming from
Annie Brennan,
Kerry Gerety, and
Kaitlyn Dowsett. Brennan and Dowsett also added an assist, giving them four-point days. Senior
Nicole McNeely and junior
Mary Soures also added a pair of goals on the day to complete the scoring for the Saints.
Niagara was led by a five-point day from Shea Swartwout, who finishes her weekend with 11 total points. She scored four goals and added an assist on her day, while Rachel Crane scored three goals and an assist. Defensively, Crane also grabbed three ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Both sides came out swinging in the early going, as both sides got on the board in the first five minutes of play. It would be a relatively close half and defensive as both sides played to a 5-5 tie through the first 30 minutes.
In the second half, Siena would jump out to a 7-5 lead with two quick goals courtesy of Gerety and Dowsett. Chaos would ensue on each offensive side, as both sides would combine for five goals in a three minute span as the Saints pushed their lead to 10-7. Soures and Brennan each scored after the flurry, as Siena grabbed a five-goal lead with 14:58 to play.
Over the next 10 minutes of play, Niagara scored six unanswered goals as they took the lead with about five minutes to play. Brennan would give a quick response to Niagara's go-ahead goal, scoring 41 seconds after the strike to re-tie the game at 13-13. But just another minute later, Swartwout would nab the go-ahead goal, as the Purple Eagles held off the Saints late push to keep the victory.
The Saints return to action Apr. 2 when they return home to the friendly confines of Hickey Field. Siena will take on the Quinnipiac Bobcats starting at 2 PM.
