Gerety Breaks Career Draw Control Record in Big Win Over Canisius

Senior Breaks Record, Soures Scores Seven Goals as Saints Start Season 2-0

LOUDONVILLE, NY – Senior Kerry Gerety and junior Mary Soures each stood out among a 17-8 final score on Sunday afternoon, as the pair each helped the Siena Women's Lacrosse team to their first 2-0 start since 2016 as they defeated the Canisius Golden Griffins.

Gerety became the all-time leader in career draw controls with a draw control to open the second half. She eclipses Julia Sirianni's career mark of 227 draw controls, getting her the top spot as she finished with 12 total draw controls on the game. She also added a goal and an assist to her stat line. The big offensive output came from junior Mary Soures, as she scored seven goals and an assist for eight total points and a team-high five ground balls. Redshirt junior Kaitlyn Dowsett notched three goals and three assists for a total of six points.

Canisius was led by a five-point afternoon from Paige Stachura, as she collected four goals and an assist. Riley Davis and Marissa Malvaso each scored a pair of points for the Golden Griffins, as both players scored one goal and one assist.

Canisius came out and scored three goals to open the game, taking the early 3-0 less than eight minutes in. The Saints finally broke through with 19:14 on the clock in the first, as Dowsett converted a free position opportunity. That goal began a 6-0 run for the Saints that was capped by a goal from Hayley Kmack with 6:45 to play. By the end of the half, both sides played to a 7-5 score.

Soures had notched four goals in the first half, and opened up the scoring in the second half with a pair of goals to give her six goals on the day. Her scores catapulted the Saints to 10 unanswered goals in the first 15 minutes of the half as the Saints held Canisius scoreless over that span. Soures would cap her day with 5:04 remaining in the game, giving the Saints their 17th and final goal of the day as she found the twine for her seventh goal of the day.

Siena outshot the Golden Griffins 38-23, including a 28-16 spread in shots on goal. The Saints also went a perfect 11 for 11 in clear attempts, and had only seven turnovers the whole game.

The Saints return to action next Sunday, Mar. 14 when they head south to take on the Manhattan Jaspers. The opening draw will kick things off at 12 PM.
