Men’s Tennis Completes Comeback in Win at Merrimack

Saints Prevail From 3-1 Early Deficit to Grab Victory in Season Opener

LOUDONVILLE, NY – Down by a score of 3-1, the Siena Men's Tennis Team won three straight points, capped by a win from fifth year Geovanny Mendoza to take a come-from-behind 4-3 victory over the Merrimack Warriors to open their 2021 spring season.

"I'm extremely proud of the guys today to battle against a good Merrimack team," said head coach Jeff Osborn. "Down five guys today from the lineup, it just shows how deep this team is and how much fight they have in them. Down 3-1 in the match, they never gave up and came back to win it with Geo in straight sets."

Despite a win from Mendoza and freshman Somo Yokoyama at #3 doubles by a score of 6-4, the Saints would drop the firs two courts to go into an early 1-0 deficit. Both Tomas del Olmo and Guillermo Lopez Torres would also each fall at #1 and #2 singles while sophomore Matt Nardone got the Saints on the board to make things 3-1.

From there, freshman Darek Kuczynski won his court at #3 singles by a score of 7-6 (4), 6-1. With the win getting Siena within a point, Yokoyama would pick up where he left off in doubles and take a win at #6 singles 6-2, 6-4. With the match now tied 3-3, Mendoza would pick up the clinching point in straight sets at #5 singles by a score of 6-1, 6-3.

The Saints return to action on Sunday, Mar. 21 when they host Hofstra for their home opener at Tri-City Fitness. Opening serve for the match kicks things off at 5:45 PM.
