The Siena Women's Lacrosse program came out with victory in a barn burner in New Rochelle on Tuesday afternoon, as the Green and Gold topped the Iona Gaels by a final score of 19-18. Redshirt Junior
Kaitlyn Dowsett would be the star of the show, scoring nine points all while collecting her 100
th career point in a Siena uniform.
The 37 goals ties a program-record of combined score when they Saints and Fairfield Stags combined for a 24-13 loss for the Saints back on April 20, 2008. Earlier this year, the Saints and Quinnipiac Bobcats combined for 36 goals in a 19-17 final in a win for Siena.
Dowsett's nine points were the most by a Saint this season in a single game, as she scored six times while dishing three assists. Junior
Mary Soures also continued her strong play, scoring four goals while tossing a pair of assists. Senior
Hayley Kmack also had a solid day with three points on two goals and an assist, while
Kerry Gerety,
Laura Bonomo, and
Kelsey Lane also had two points apiece. Gerety also finished with 10 draw controls.
Iona was led by a six goal effort from Emily Stewart. She scored all six on just seven shots. Caton Brisbin finished with five points on three goals and a pair of assists. Sara Stewart would also finish with three points on two goals and an assist. Stewart, Brisbin, and Leah Marshall all added five draw controls as well.
The Saints scored early and often, with the first goal coming less than two minutes into the game as Kmack would break the ice with a woman-up goal. The Saints and Gaels traded scores as Iona was able to grab a 4-3 lead with 15:47 to play. But, that would lead the Saints to score seven of the next eight goals, with Dowsett's milestone goal would come at the 9:45 mark in the first half to make the score 7-4. The run would be capped by a strike from Bonomo with 34 seconds to play in the first half as Siena would make it 10-5. However, the Gaels would get the final say with a goal with eight seconds to play to make it 10-6 at the half.
In the second half, the Saints maintained a strong lead as Dowsett continued to find the back of the net and help others fins the back of the net. Siena's largest lead would come off a goal from Lane, who scored an unassisted goal for her first of the season with 12:58 to play to make it 17-10. From there, the Gaels chipped away scoring three straight goals over a two-minute span to get back within four, 17-13.
Soures and Dowsett once again opened the lead back up to six as they both scored in a span of 90 seconds to make things 19-13 with 7:51 to play. With the six goal lead, Iona hit the gas pedal and scored give straight goals, with their 18
th coming with just 38 seconds to play. But the Saints were able to win the following draw, helping them close out the win.
The Saints return to action on Friday, Apr. 16 when they play host to the Marist Red Foxes in the first of a two-game weekend set at Hickey Field. Game one of the series is set for a 3 p.m. opening draw.
