Siena Falls at Manhattan to Begin Weekend Series

The Saints Dropped a Pair of Road Matchups Friday Afternoon

Siena Softball (14-10) stumbled in a pair of road matches that began a four-game weekend series at MAAC foe Manhattan (15-9) Friday afternoon at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, New York. The Saints fell, 6-2, in game one, before dropping a tight 3-2 decision in the nightcap.

Game 1: Manhattan 6, Siena 2

Looking to gain momentum after coming off a mid-week doubleheader sweep at Niagara, the Saints got on the board first in the top of the second, with junior Yamila Evans launching her third home run of the season to left field. Manhattan would counter with a crooked inning in the fourth, sliding three runs across to take the lead on an RBI single, a bases loaded walk, and an RBI groundout. The Jaspers tacked on three more runs via an RBI single and a catcher's interference call in the fifth to seal the deal.

The Saints would get a run back in the top of the seventh from Evans, who sent deep to left again for her second home run of the day, becoming the first Saint since program great Madysen Cossack to log a multi home run contest. The damage had already been dealt, however, with Manhattan's Jessie Riding (5-2) taking the complete game win in the circle while striking out five. Siena's Allison Speshyock (6-3) took the loss in three and one-third innings, giving up three runs on five hits and striking out a pair.

Game 2: Manhattan 3, Siena 2

The Saints looked to bounce back and avoid losing consecutive games for just the third time this season in game two, but found themselves down, 3-0, in the middle innings. A two-run homer from Manhattan's Annie Moore got the home team on the board in the first, while an RBI single in the home half of the third extended the lead. Siena once again found the board on a long ball, with sophomore Angelina Stile recording her third big-fly of the season on a two-RBI shot in the top of the sixth.

The Saints left the game-tying run on the base paths in both the sixth and seventh innings, and could not secure the split on the day. Manhattan's Nicole Williams (6-1) logged the win in five innings, pitching a two-hit shutout while striking out three. Siena's Maddie McMahon (5-3) was downed in complete game fashion, Striking out eight in the process.

Siena will look to force a split in the weekend series when the teams meet for more doubleheader action on Saturday, April 24 at 11 AM & 1 PM.
