With 1:01 to play in the game and down by three goals, the Siena women's lacrosse team dug up some magic and found three goals in that final minute before senior
Kerry Gerety notched a goal in overtime to defeat the Marist Red Foxes on the road by a 17-16 final. Senior
Nicole McNeely had a huge hand in the results, scoring seven goals with three assists for a new career-high 10 points.
McNeely's 10 points are the single most in a game in the MAAC by any school all season. The Saints have now won their last six games, setting a new program record in consecutive wins. The previous record was five wins in a row, set by the 2009 squad.
Backing up McNeely's performance was fifth year
Annie Brennan notching a four point day with three goals and an assist. Junior
Mary Soures also scored a pair of goals and an assist for three points. Senior
Kerry Gerety and freshman
Taryn Asselin each had a pair of points, with Gerety scoring twice while Asselin scored once and dished an assist.
Marist was led by a six-goal game from Kelly George, who also added an assist to her stat line. Samantha Mehalick scored twice with three assists for five points, while Devon Connolly scored four goals. In the cage, Delaney Galvin kept the Red Foxes in the game with 12 total saves. Marist would outdraw the Saints 22-12, while also outshooting the Saints 35-33.
It was a back-and-forth battle between the two teams in the first half, as McNeely shouldered the load offensively early, having a hand in the first two goals for Siena. Marist kept pace, and were able to score a go-ahead goal with 1:43 in the first to take an 8-7 lead on the Green and Gold. That score would remain into the halfway point.
Siena came out with three straight scores to start the second half, as Gerety, McNeely, and
Julia Pelcher each scored to give Siena a 10-8 lead in the first five minutes of the half. However, Marist would respond with four goals in a row to re-take the lead, 12-10 with 19:25 to play. Marist maintained that lead through the next 14 minutes, as the Red Foxes scored a goal with 4:07 to play to make it 16-13.
As the clock hit 1:01 to play, McNeely would score, cutting the Marist lead to two goals at 16-14. The Saints would then win the draw control, gain possession back and force Marist into a pair of yellow cards with 32 seconds to play. A free position by Brennan would be converted, as now Siena trailed by just one goal with 29 seconds to play. Siena would then win the draw again, and after a timeout forced another free position attempt with four seconds to play. McNeely would be the one to take it, converting, and forcing overtime with the score now 16-16.
In overtime, it seemed three minutes might go without a score, but another late yellow card from Marist would hurt the Red Foxes, as the Saints were able to set up with an woman-up advantage, leading to Gerety finding space in the slot right in front of the net. She would rip a shot that found the twine, sending the Green and Gold home with a victory.
The Saints return to action this Saturday in the MAAC Quarterfinals, as the Saints have locked up the No. 2 seed in the upcoming MAAC Championships. Siena will face off against the No. 7 seed Canisius Golden Griffins at Hickey Field, with time to be determined. The Saints have defeated the Golden Griffins twice this season, which were the Saints' first two games this year.
