Looking to finish up its first road series of the Spring 2021 season, Siena Softball (5-7) recorded a doubleheader split for the fifth straight time, securing a series split in the four-game affair at Fairfield (8-6). The Saints dropped a 5-1 decision in first game of the day, but rebounded with a 7-0 shutout victory in the nightcap to earn the split at Alumni Softball Field in Fairfield, Connecticut.

Game 1: Fairfield 5, Siena 1
Â
Coming off a doubleheader split to open the rescheduled mid-week series on Wednesday, the Green and Gold got on the board first in the opening frame of game one, with sophomore
Emma McLaughlin sending home freshman
Isabella Pardo on an RBI single. Fairfield responded with a bases-loaded RBI single of its own to knot things at one in the home half of the frame.
Â
With Siena's
Maddie McMahon in the circle to start, the Stags took the lead for good in the bottom of the third, with Kaitlin Hoffman recording a grand slam to bring the score to 5-1. The Saints only landed one runner on the basepaths during the final four frames, and could not recover, with McMahon (1-2) taking the loss in three innings despite striking out four. Allie Bridgman (2-0) earned the complete game win by allowing just three hits for the Stags, with McLaughlin, junior
Yamila Evans, and senior
Taylor Rhinehart each hitting safely for Siena in the loss. Â

Game 2: Siena 7, Fairfield 0
Â
Just as they did in Wednesday's affair, Siena turned things around in game two, recording its second shutout in as many days off the arm of sophomore right-hander
Allison Speshyock (3-1). The Goleta, California native went the distance, allowing six hits while striking out four and walking seven, and received the run support she needed from Siena's offense to earn the victory.
Â
Following two scoreless frames, Siena jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third, with an RBI double from Evans and RBI singles from sophomore
Maritza Diaz and
Antonia Alba allowing runs to score. Senior
Isabelle DeChiaro singled to right field to add to the lead in the fourth, while McLaughlin plated Pardo on a sacrifice fly later that inning. The final two runs found their way on the board for the Saints in the fifth, with junior
Sabrina Vargas plating Alba on a bases-loaded knock, and DeChiaro reaching on a fielder's choice to allow classmate
Neysa Ouellette to cross home. Fairfield's Katie Kudlacik took the loss, surrendering five runs (two earned) on six hits over three innings.
Â
Siena will next return home for a newly scheduled four-game weekend series against Saint Peter's at Siena softball Field. The Saints, who were originally scheduled to play at the Peacocks next weekend, will now host doubleheaders on Saturday, April 10, and Sunday April 11, which will mark a stretch of 12 games played over seven days.
