Siena Women's Soccer improved to 2-0 on the young season with a 2-1 victory at Holy Cross.
Ashleigh Sarafin and
Rebecca Rolland both scored first half goals, while reigning MAAC Defensive Player of the Week
Brooke Boermeester made four saves for the Saints.
Although both teams registered seven shots and four corners apiece in the opening half, Siena (2-0) made the most of its opportunities to claim a commanding 2-0 lead through the first 45.
In the 21
st minute, some stellar teamwork staked the Saints to an early advantage.
Jayanna Monds created a turnover and fed
Emily McNelis at the top of the 18. McNelis one-timed a pass to
Carrie Krohn who in turn centered one-touch to Sarafin who roofed in the opening score.
Rolland then netted her first collegiate tally late in the opening half to double the lead. Off a corner kick in the 37
th minute, the sophomore had her initial header deflected and botched around in traffic before the ball popped back up and she headed it home.
Siena held the fort during a defensive-minded second half, stymying the Holy Cross (0-2) pressure. The Crusaders would get one goal back late on a Katie Quinn score in the 82
nd minute, but the Saints held on from there to secure the win.
Overall, Holy Cross held a 12-8 advantage in shots and a 7-4 margin in corners. Each side put five shots on goal apiece.
Siena returns to action Thursday when they host Vermont at 2 p.m. at Siena Field.
