Vermont Outlasts Saints in Double Overtime Heartbreaker

Catamounts Strike Last in 103rd Minute

LOUDONVILLE, NY – Alexa Mihale curved in the golden goal off a corner in the 103rd minute as Vermont defeated Siena Women's Soccer 3-2 in a double overtime heartbreaker. Emily McNelis scored in the 86th minute to rally the Saints to overtime.

Siena (2-1) fell despite holding a 17-14 advantage in shots and a 9-3 margin in corners. The setback snapped the Saints seven-match regular season unbeaten streak (6-0-1) dating back to the start of last season.

Siena led following the opening half thanks to an 11th minute own goal. McNelis' cross from the left ricocheted off a defender and in to give the Saints a 1-0 lead at the break.

Vermont (2-0) came out strong to start the second half and scored twice in less than 13 minutes midway through the stanza to claim the lead. Alyssa Oviedo netted the equalizer in the 58th minute, with Bailey Ayer finishing the go-ahead tally off a cross from Alex West in the 71st minute.

But Siena, which has a history of wild finishes against the Catamounts, added another chapter. For the fifth time in the past seven meetings between the programs, the Saints scored either the tying or winning goal in the final five minutes of regulation or in overtime. With just 4:56 remaining, Gabby DeAngelis sent in a long kick which Darby D'Angelo headed on into the box and McNelis finished to knot the score.

But Vermont would have the final say on this day, as early in the second overtime the left footed Mihale curved in a corner kick from the right which bent just inside the far left post to give the Catamounts the walk-off win. UVM has now scored seven goals in winning their first two matches of the fall.

Reigning MAAC Goalkeeper of the Year Leslie Adams made three saves in her season debut for Siena, while Lydia Kessel stopped six shots to earn the win for Vermont.

The Saints will look to bounce back Sunday when they have a quick turnaround with a 3 p.m. kickoff at Lehigh on ESPN+.
