Melina Ortiz scored her first collegiate goal in the 89
th minute, but it wasn't enough as Lehigh held on to defeat Siena Women's Soccer 2-1 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
Leslie Adams made eight saves in a strong effort for the Saints.
Lehigh (1-2) held decided advantages in both shots (18-10) and corner kicks (9-5), and scored twice in the first half to capture the first-ever meeting between the programs. Courtney Supp (19') and Ava Schaller (26') scored less than seven minutes apart midway through the first half to stake the Mountain Hawks to a lead they would not relinquish.
Siena (2-2) battled back and finally broke through with just 64 seconds remaining. Ortiz won a ball down the left sideline and completed a nice give-and-go with
Annie Bagnall. Ortiz then sent in a tough angle shot from the left which lofted inside the far right post to give the Saints a chance.
But it was too little, too late as Lehigh held on to snap Siena's three-match road win streak and four-match unbeaten streak vs. Patriot League foes.
Following a grueling three matches in six days week, the Saints will look to bounce back with their only contest next week set for Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Sacred Heart.
