LOWELL, MA – Taking the road for the first time during the Fall 2021 regular season, Siena Men's Soccer (1-1) needed extra time to decide things at UMass Lowell (1-0-1) in the first-ever meeting between the two programs. The River Hawks pulled out a 1-0 overtime victory over the Saints Monday afternoon at Cushing Field, after controlling much of the match offensively in regulation.
With the Saints facing a non-conference opponent on the road for the first time in nearly two years, UMass Lowell set the pace of play in its home-opener, out-shooting Siena, 15-2, and holding a 6-1 advantage in shots on-goal. The Green and Gold began to build offensive momentum in the second half, with five of their six corner kicks of the game coming in the final 45 minutes of regulation.
After a scoreless draw took Siena to its first overtime match since March 28, UMass Lowell saw Borna Miklic net the game-winner in the 93
rd minute off a pass in front from the right side. The Saints got shots from redshirt-junior
Antonio Linge and freshman
Zach Gardner in the loss, while senior goalkeeper
Greg Monroe recorded a season-best five saves.
Now sitting at .500 on the season, Siena Men's Soccer will continue a two-match non-conference road trip at Bryant on Saturday, September 4 at 7:00 PM in Smithfield, Rhode Island.
