Saints Bounce Back, Open MAAC Title Defense With Overtime Triumph

Women’s Soccer Dispatches Rider 2-1 in League Lid Lifter

LOUDONVILLE, NY – Sometimes all you need is a lucky bounce to get back on track. Danielle Borrino's long service in the 93rd minute bounced in front of the keeper and went up, over, and in, as Siena Women's Soccer snapped a five-match losing streak and opened its MAAC Championship defense with a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory over Rider.

Siena (3-5, 1-0) rallied from a late first half deficit to open its milestone 30th season of MAAC competition victorious. The hotly contested rematch of last spring's MAAC Semifinal on Hickey Field could not have been more tightly played, with each side putting nine of their 16 shots on target while Siena held a 3-2 margin in corners.

Both squads scored within the final five minutes of the first half, with Kansas State transfer Chloe Fisher striking first for Rider (2-4-1, 0-1) with just 4:04 remaining in the stanza. But the Saints quickly responded less than two minutes later as senior Julianna Kissane scored her first collegiate goal, finishing a cross from Jayanna Monds to knot the score at 1-1 with only 2:21 left before the break. Kissane became the eighth different Saint to account for the team's first nine goals this fall, with the other coming via an own goal.

The Broncs nearly enacted a measure of revenge for last season's semifinal setback, as Fisher was awarded a potentially decisive penalty kick with just 4:22 remaining in regulation. But reigning MAAC Defensive Player of the Year Leslie Adams, who cemented her name in program lore last spring with a pair of huge saves during the penalty shootout in the MAAC Championship Match, rose to the occasion once more. Not only did Adams stone Fisher's attempt, but also turned aside her point blank rebound to preserve the tie.

Those stops opened the door for Borrino to be the overtime hero. Just 2:47 into the first extra session, Caitlin Wania passed to Borrino who teed up a 40-yard shot from the right. The keeper came off her line but hesitated, letting the ball bounce and take an awkward hop over her and into the net for the golden goal.

Adams made eight saves to earn the victory for Siena, which ran its Hickey Field unbeaten streak to eight (6-0-2) while outscoring the opposition 17-3 during that stretch.

Ellie Sciancalepore stopped seven shots for Rider, as 10 of the last 11 matchups between the programs have now been decided by one goal or ended in a tie.

After opening MAAC action on a high note, Siena will look to close out its non-conference slate with an equally positive result when the Saints host crosstown rival UAlbany Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Hickey Field.
