LOUDONVILLE, NY – For the second straight crosstown showdown, Siena Women's Soccer scored the tying goal late in the second half to lead to another 1-1 draw with UAlbany at Hickey Field.
Emily McNelis netted the equalizer in the 81
st minute, while
Brooke Boermeester made eight saves for the Saints.
Meeting for the fifth straight non-conference season and sixth time in the past seven years, Siena (3-5-1, 1-0) and UAlbany (1-5-2, 0-1) settled for their second straight 1-1 final. The Great Danes held a 21-15 advantage in shots and a 9-3 margin in corners.
Jasmine Colbert accounted for nine of UAlbany's shots, and staked the Great Danes to a 1-0 lead with just 3:05 remaining in the first half. Devon Schmitt intercepted a pass deep in her zone and one-timed a long ball the other way which Colbert won the foot race to, broke free, and finished.
The Saints battled back and knotted the score late thanks to the connection between captains
Carrie Krohn and
Emily McNelis. Krohn made a great individual effort forcing a turnover in deep, and crossed along the top of the six-yard box to McNelis who finished at the far post to draw Siena even with 9:19 remaining in regulation.
Colbert had a nearly identical break-in late with a chance to be the hero, but Boermeester got the upper hand the second time, making a tremendous stop in transition to preserve the tie.
Cassandra Coster made six saves for UAlbany.
With the hard-earned point, the Saints extended their Hickey Field unbeaten streak to nine straight (6-0-3).
Siena, which played five of its eight non-conference contests against America East opponents, wrapped up with a 1-3-1 mark vs. the conference.
The Saints now have a full week to recover before resuming MAAC action for good when they travel to Fairfield for a 7 p.m. kickoff next Wednesday night in Connecticut.
