Late Score Powers Saints to Tie at Vermont

Freshman Jacob Arachchige-Jensen Netted the Equalizer with One Second Remaining

BURLINGTON, VT – Down by one goal on the road against a regionally-ranked opponent, Siena Men's Soccer (3-3-1) put the ball in the hands of its primary set piece taker with five seconds remaining and one last free kick opportunity. Freshman Jacob Arachchige-Jensen proceeded to bury a top shelf equalizer to the left side with a tick left to propel the Saints to a 2-2 tie with America East Foe Vermont (5-1-1).

The Catamounts, who entered the contest ranked fifth in the latest United Soccer Coaches Northeast Region Rankings and had previously received votes in the national poll, had allowed just three goals in their first six matches of the season entering Tuesday's duel at Virtue Field in Burlington, Vermont. Despite the home team dominating in shots and corner kick opportunities throughout the evening, Siena battled defensively to set up scoring opportunities.

The Saints found the back of the net in the 16th minute of play, with reigning MAAC Rookie of the Week Zach Gardner pushing a cross past the goalkeeper to score from inside the box, marking his second straight match with a goal. Vermont would tie it up on a corner kick just under 20 minutes later and take a 2-1 lead just before the half on another set piece in the 45 minute.

The Catamounts held 34-10 shots and 17-3 corner kick advantages on the night, but the Saints continued to contend in the second half, with all three corner kick opportunities coming during the latter 45 minutes of regulation. Following a Siena red card that put them a man down with just 25 seconds remaining, the team drew one final opportunity the Arachchige-Jensen converted for his first collegiate goal. Vermont fired off 12 shots between both overtime periods, but the Saints defended strong for their first draw of the season and their first in non-conference play since September 8, 2018.

The Saints' 10 shots were compiled by six different players, with Arachchige-Jensen, Gardner, redshirt-junior Antonio Linge, and freshman Erik Reis each getting off two. Senior goalkeeper Greg Monroe shined in his 50th career start, posting a collegiate-best 11 saves in-net to eclipse the double-digit saves mark for just the second time in his career.

Siena now holds its best start through seven matches since 2014 (5-2) and will next return home to continue non-conference play. The Saints will face off against Ivy League opponent Brown for the first time since 2014 on Saturday, September 25 at Hickey Field, with action kicking off at 3:30 PM on either ESPN3 or ESPN+.
