LOUDONVILLE, NY – Siena Men's Soccer (4-3-1) used its final non-conference match of the Fall 2021 season to record a comeback that had not been seen in recent program history. The Saints rallied from a 2-0 halftime deficit to defeat Ivy League foe Brown (2-5), 3-2, at Hickey Field Saturday afternoon behind seven different point scorers, continuing their best start to a season since 2014.
Â
Looking to continue success following a hard-earned mid-week tie at regionally-ranked Vermont last Tuesday, the Saints found themselves in a formidable hole at home following the first half, with the Bears getting on the board in the 27
th minute with a far left cross headed in from the right of the box. Following the opening score from Clifton Park, New York native Brady Van Epps, Brown extended its lead off a quick free kick that was finished by leading scorer Derek Waleffe in the 42
nd minute.
Â
Looking to move quickly and capitalize off halftime adjustments, the Green and Gold kicked off a span of three goals in 24 minutes just 1:53 into the final half, with freshman
Olafur Freysson and sophomore
Junior Kone chipping in to allow sophomore
Nick Fernandes to finish a cross inside the box to get the home team on the board. All three notched their first career point on the play, with Fernandes securing the first goal of his collegiate career.
Â
The Saints knotted the match at two to complete the first two-goal comeback in program history in at least the last 20 years with the help from the freshmen Storodegard brothers up front. Following a long service from sophomore
Bilal Hersi to the near side,
Frederic Storodegard crossed the ball to his brother
Thomas Storodegard who finished up front for the equalizer in the 69
th minute.
Â
The match would not stay tied for long, with Hersi getting help from Frederic and freshman
Zach Gardner to give the Saints the lead with their third straight goal just a minute and 56 seconds later at 69:57. A feed from Hersi to Gardner went to Storodegard on the near side and then back to Hersi, who jammed in the near-post score for his second goal of the year.
Â
The Saints accomplished the feat and ended non-conference play with a winning mark for the first time in seven years despite being out-shot, 15-6, with five of six shots on-goal in the match resulting in scores. The only one that did not result in a Siena team save, with neither goalkeeper in the match recording a save in-between-the-pipes. Brown totaled eight corner kicks to the Saints' three, with Siena successfully defending against a flurry of Brown shots in the final minutes of the match.
Â
Now improving to 3-1 on the year inside the friendly confines of Hickey Field, Siena will prepare to begin MAAC play with a pair of rigorous road matches next week. The Saints will kick off their 33
rd year in the league in Hamden, Connecticut at defending Regular Season Champion Quinnipiac on Wednesday, September 29 at 3 PM before traveling to duel with Manhattan on Saturday, October 2 at 1 PM.
