Men’s Soccer Drops Overtime Thriller to Begin MAAC Play

The Saints Fell at the Hands of a Penalty Kick at Quinnipiac

HAMDEN, CT – Despite a furious second half rally which featured a pair of goals scored in a minute and 45 seconds, Siena Men's Soccer (4-4-1) could not capture road victory over defending MAAC Regular Season Champion Quinnipiac (6-2). The Bobcats capped a 3-2 win in extra time at the Quinnipiac Soccer & Lacrosse Stadium in Hamden, Connecticut, ending the Saints' three-match unbeaten streak.

Siena kicked off its 33rd season of MAAC play and second under head coach and former Bobcat star and assistant coach Graciano Brito in search of its third MAAC Opener win in the last four seasons, and were met with a solid Bobcat offense in the first half. MAAC Preseason Player of the Year Brage Aasen broke through in the 28th minute to get the Bobcats on the board at home, despite the Saints holding a 6-4 shots advantage in the first half of action.

Playing in Hamden for the third time in just over six months, the Saints picked up the pace in the second half to break through on the scoreboard in tie the match at one in the 55th minute, with redshirt-junior Antonio Linge crossing from the left lane to allow freshman Frederic Storodegard to put one away. The visitors' breakthrough would come just under two minutes later, when freshman Jacob Sandun Arachchige-Jensen drew and converted a penalty kick in the 57th minute.

Looking to bounce back from two tough losses at home, the Bobcats broke through to put the match tied back at two in the 82nd minute and force the Saints to overtime for the third time this season. Quinnipiac ended the day with just under a minute off the clock as Aasen converted a penalty kick try for his second goal of the game.

The Bobcats held an 11-10 shots advantage and drew 17 Siena fouls in a contest that saw the two teams combine for 31 fouls and three penalty kick attempts. Eight different Saints registered a shot attempt, with Linge and Arachchige-Jensen putting forth two each. Senior goalkeeper Greg Monroe made three saves in the effort, and contributed to a failed QU penalty kick attempt in the second half.

Siena will continue MAAC play in search of its first conference win on Saturday, October 2 at Manhattan at 1 PM on ESPN3.
