LOUDONVILLE, NY – A first-half penalty kick that was drawn as a result of a red card proved to be the difference for Siena Men's Soccer (2-2), Tuesday afternoon at Hickey Field. The Saints were forced to play a man down for the remaining 63 minutes of the match, falling in a 1-0 decision to America East foe Binghamton (3-1).
Â
The Bearcats controlled much of the first half offensively, and had the ball on a one-on two inside the 18-yard-line when Siena drew a red card and were forced to play down a man in the 28
th minute. Binghamton's Ethan Homler converted the resulting penalty kick as the Saints suffered their second shutout of the year and ended a five-match unbeaten streak at home.
Â
Despite the visitors holding a 12-7 shots advantage, the Saints drew opportunities on six corner kicks and nearly had the equalizer with a late drive and attempt from
Eric Reis in the final minutes of the game that was saved. Freshman midfielder
Zach Gardner steadied the Green and Gold offensively with three shot attempts, while senior goalkeeper
Greg Monroe registered six saves in the loss.
Â
Homler's six shots led the Bearcats offensively, while keeper Mats Rorrda made three saves. The penalty-laden affair included 19 combined fouls and six combined cards, four of which were assessed to Siena. Â
Â
Siena will continue non-conference play with a regional road match this weekend, traveling south to face Army West Point on Saturday, September 11 at 7:00 PM.
