NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The MAAC's most storied men's basketball programs and past two tournament champions meet for the first time this season when Siena battles Iona Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at the Hynes Athletics Center.
Iona (16-3, 8-0) and Siena (6-7, 3-2) rank 1-2 all-time in MAAC history in tournament championships (13-6), regular season titles (10-9), and conference victories (411-322). The Saints rank second all-time in all three categories despite joining the MAAC eight years after Iona, as well as fellow league rivals Fairfield, Manhattan, and Saint Peter's, all of whom Siena stands ahead of in each category.
Siena (2019-20) and Iona (2020-21) have accounted for the past two MAAC Tournament Championships, with the programs set to meet Tuesday for the first time since the Gaels defeated the Saints in last season's quarterfinals on their way to winning the title. The squads were initially scheduled to meet for the first time this season on New Year's Eve in New Rochelle, but COVID had other plans.
Siena is looking to bounce back after seeing both its four-game overall and road win streaks snapped Friday night at Manhattan. Meanwhile, Iona has won five straight overall and nine in a row at home dating back to last season.
Siena has played Iona more times than any other opponent, with the programs set to meet for the 120th time in a series which the Gaels leads 66-53. The rivals have split the past 10 meetings, with eight of those matchups decided by five points or less. The Saints have enjoyed recent success on Iona's homecourt, capturing four of the last five tilts in New Rochelle.
