EMMITSBURG, MD – In the midst of competing for the top spot in the MAAC, Siena Men's Soccer has seen a point scored by 18 different players – the most in a single campaign since 2002. The leader of the pack has been sophomore Thomas Storodegard, who struck again in record-breaking fashion to get his squad back in the win column.
Siena (7-4-3) rebounded from a loss last Wednesday to take a 2-0 victory at conference newcomer Mount St. Mary's (6-6-1) in Emmitsburg, Maryland on Saturday afternoon. The Saints recorded their sixth shutout of the year, marking the most in a single campaign since 2015 (seven).
Following a scoreless first half which featured four shot attempts from each team, Siena turned on the gas in the second half, holding a 9-3 shots advantage and concluding the match with six of ten total corner kick attempts on the day.
The Saints' second half struggles paid off in the 75th minute, when junior Bilal Hersi crossed a feed from the left side to sophomore Jacob Sandun Arachchige-Jensen to one-time to classmate Thomas Storodegard, who finished in the front right of the goal. The reigning MAAC Offensive Player of the Week's team-leading seventh strike of the year was also good for his fifth game-winner of the season to set a single-season program record.
Siena had one more offensive opportunity in the game's final seconds, with a long volley from Mount St. Mary's resulting in a one-on-one opportunity for sophomore Olafur Freysson. Despite logging just eight minutes in his fifth appearance of the year, the Reykjavik, Iceland native beat the Mount St. Mary's keeper out for his first collegiate goal, with classmate Jesper Schone Vogtengen recording his team-leading seventh assist in the process.
Despite not logging a single save in the win, reigning MAAC Defensive Player of the Week Greg Monroe collected his fifth clean sheet of the year in-goal, and remains two stops away from becoming the program's all-time leader in saves.
Siena will close out a stretch of four of five matches away from home to begin next week, with the Saints heading to Jersey City, New Jersey to face Saint Peter's at 2 PM on Wednesday, October 19.
