LOUDONVILLE, NY – The Siena Volleyball team had their eight-match winning streak come to an end on Wednesday evening, as the second-place Saints fell to the first-place Fairfield Stags by a final score of 3-2 (25-17, 20-25, 25-17, 23-25, 15-7). The match is the Saints first loss since Sept. 27, and first league loss since Sept. 25.
Graduate student
Emily Wunder collected a match-high 16 kills – with five coming in the first set. Siena fell to a slow start, as the Stags took advantage with a 25-17 win in that first frame. The Saints battled back and answered the call in the second set, with Siena turning the tables with a 25-20 win as sophomore
Sara Wagner became more involved in the offense.
The third set would repeat the third as Fairfield took a 2-1 series lead with a 25-17 score once again. It looked like the Stags might close the match in set four, as they led 23-19 late. Freshman
Emily Wood took over the serve for the Saints and led the Green and Gold on a 6-0 run through the end of the set to take a 25-23 win.
With the match tied headed to the fifth, Fairfield found their stride and led the full length of the set. Despite a strong effort from the Saints, Fairfield took the fifth 15-7, ending the match and the Saints win streak.
Senior
Gracie Halley had a career-high 33 digs, while Wagner (14 kills) and
Hailey Hinkel (11 kills) followed Wunder's effort, with Hinkel chipping in with 10 digs for a double-double. Sophomore
Claire Isaksen also tossed out 41 assists with 11 digs for a double-double as well.
Siena returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 3 p.m. in the UHY Center as they return home to play host to the Saint Peter's Peacocks.
