LEESBURG, FL – Competing in the second day of opening weekend action in the Sunshine State, Siena softball (1-3) picked up its first win of the 2022 season in a doubleheader split with Ivy League foe Cornell. The Saints took a 4-1 victory over the Big Red before falling in the nightcap, 5-2, to continue action at The Spring Games in Leesburg, Florida.

Following two scoreless innings to open the day, the Saints struck first in the bottom of the third, with senior
Sabrina Vargas reaching on an error that paved the way for sophomore
Isabella Pardo to come around from second and score. An RBI ground out during the next inning plated an insurance run in the form of junior
Jocelyn Ulrich, while Pardo scored again on a ground out in the fifth. Cornell got on the board in the top of the sixth with an RBI single, while senior
Ava Fitzmaurice scored on an error in the sixth to further extend the Saints' lead.
Both Pardo and Fitzmaurice registered a pair of hits for the Saints, who capitalized on six Cornell errors. Fitzmaurice (1-1) also picked up her first win in the circle for Siena, tossing five strikeouts and allowing an unearned run in a complete game victory, Gabrielle Maday (0-1) took the complete game loss for the Big Red, striking out five in six innings.

After giving the Saints their first win of the year, Cornell came from behind to get in the win column for the first time during game two. Following an RBI single from Fitzmaurice in the top of the first to get the Saints on the board, send eight to bat in the bottom of the second to plate four runs and take the lead for good. After an insurance run came in the following inning for the Big Red, Fitzmaurice scored on a sacrifice fly from
Angelina Stile, but the Saints stranded four runners in the final three innings.
Both Fitzmaurice and Pardo again put forth two hits each to lead the Saints offensively, with junior
Allison Speshyock (0-2) taking the loss in a one-and-one-third innings in the circle. Junior
Nicole Patille pitched 1.2 innings in relief, while freshman
Adriana Romano struck out three in her collegiate debut of three innings. Cornell's Maxine McCraw (1-0) picked up the win in four innings, while Mia Burd collected a three-inning save.
Siena closes out the weekend at The Spring Games with a doubleheader against in-state opponents, facing North Florida at 9 AM and Florida Gulf Coast at Noon on Sunday, February 27.
