ATLANTIC CITY, NJ - Siena Basketball begins its quest for a seventh Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament Championship when the third seeded Saints take on No. 11 Quinnipiac in the MAAC Quarterfinals Thursday night at 7 p.m. at Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall.
Siena (15-13) arrives in Atlantic City in search of the program's second MAAC Championship in three seasons. The Saints rank second all-time amongst all MAAC programs in both Tournament Championships (six) and wins (40).Â
Siena enters postseason play looking to regain their February form, in which they posted a strong 7-3 record to position themselves for March. However, the Saints opened the month and concluded regular season action on the wrong side of a sweep in Western New York.Â
Siena is a stellar 24-8 (.750) all-time in MAAC Tournament openers, and 21-9 (.700) in the quarterfinal round. The Saints are seeking to advance to the MAAC Semifinals for a 22nd time in 33 Tournaments, and fifth time in seven seasons. Siena is 7-6 all-time as the No. 3 seed, including a perfect 6-0 in the MAAC Quarterfinals.Â
The Saints are set to battle a rejuvenated Quinnipiac (13-16) squad which shot the lights out in an eye-opening 77-52 rout of No. 6 seed Marist Tuesday night. The Bobcats erupted for 17 threes - the second-highest total in MAAC Tournament history - to snap a six-game losing streak entering postseason play.Â
Siena swept the regular season series from Quinnipiac, winning 85-76 on Jan. 30 in Albany and 78-71 on Feb. 24 in Connecticut. The Saints shot 52% from both the field and three and 81% from the free throw line while averaging 81.5 points in the sweep, and posted two of their four highest scoring outputs all season. Second Team All-MAAC selection
Colby Rogers led Siena, averaging 22.5 points in the sweep. Siena has won four straight overall against the Bobcats, and leads the all-time series 12-6.Â
The winner of tonight's game will advance to the MAAC Semifinals to take on No. 2 seed Saint Peter's Friday night at 8:30 p.m. The Peacocks defeated seventh-seeded Fairfield 77-63 in a MAAC Quarterfinal Wednesday night.Â
