Lacrosse Duo Honored as Leo Dufort Student Athletes of the Month

Siena Seniors Earned Award for February

LOUDONVILLE, NY – A pair of Siena Lacrosse seniors were honored as the latest Leo Dufort Student Athletes of the month. Men's Lacrosse senior Christopher Yanchoris and Women's Lacrosse senior Mary Soures were honored for the month of February.

A four-year member of the team currently serving as a team captain, Yanchoris has started each game over the past two seasons, and played every minute in-goal in 2021. The Sykesville, Maryland native tallied 119 saves and a 9.81 goals-against-average during his junior season, including a 26-save effort against Monmouth on March 13 which earned him MAAC Defensive Player of the Week honors.

Yanchoris holds an impressive 3.98 cumulative GPA, and is set to graduate this spring with a degree in business. A member of both the MAAC All-Academic Team and MAAC Academic Honor Roll, he posted a near-perfect mark of 3.92 during the Fall 2021 semester.

Also a four-year starter on the women's team, Soures is one of 17 members of the program's 100-point club, having entered her senior campaign with 106 career points. A First-Team All-MAAC selection in 2021 and Preseason All-MAAC honoree prior to this season, the Rochester, New York product led the team with 44 goals and posted 11 multi-goal games, including a seven-goal performance that led to her earning MAAC Offensive Player of the Week honors on March 12.

An English major with a 3.87 cumulative GPA, Soures posted a perfect 4.0 mark during the Fall 2021 semester. She has been named to the MAAC All-Academic Team, MAAC Academic Honor Roll, and IWLCA Academic Honor Roll during her collegiate career.

The Leo Dufort Student Athlete of the Month Award is presented nine times annually (September-May) throughout the academic year. The award recognizes exemplary achievements in both academics and athletics. The late Leo Dufort received a B.S. in marketing and management from Siena in August of 1977. His entire academic career was completed on a part-time basis beginning in the spring of 1961, as a married adult while at the same time raising five children. He passed away suddenly of a heart attack while cross country skiing in February of 1993. His wife Jeanine wanted to do something to immortalize his memory. The original plaque was donated to athletics and the department began the Leo Dufort Student Athlete of the Month Award to help carry out his legacy. Dufort graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1954 and was a Navy Veteran (USS Bennington) who worked for JL Hammett Co. at the time of his death.
