LOUDONVILLE, NY – Siena Athletics announced the latest recipients to the Leo Dufort Student Athlete of the Month honors Friday afternoon. Men's Golf junior Jack Tobin and Water Polo senior Georgia Vargas were selected for the month of March.
A three-year member of the Green and Gold, Tobin has been a day one starter for his squad, and currently holds a 74.89 stroke average through 18 rounds this season. The Southborough, Massachusetts native has recorded three top-ten individual finishes this season, including a tie for seventh at The Murray Cup and a pair of eighth place finishes at the Lehigh University Invitational and the Veteran Intercollegiate. Tobin has recorded five rounds of par-or-better this season, and aided his team and carding 13 consecutive team rounds under 300 to begin the season, as well as setting the program record for single round score (283).
A marketing major, Tobin holds a 3.58 cumulative GPA, and put forth a mark of 3.74 during the Fall 2021 semester. He has been a member of the MAAC All-Academic Team and the MAAC Academic Honor Roll during his time as Siena, as well as the Siena Dean's List.
A four-year member of her program and a co-captain this season, Vargas has recorded 177 points in the Green and Gold, including 48 this season in the form of a team-high 46 goals and two assists. The Whittier, California native earned a MAAC Offensive Player of the Week nod during her sophomore season, and has recorded eight hat tricks thus far this year.
Vargas is set to graduate in the spring with a degree in Psychology, and currently holds a 3.6 cumulative GPA. She has earned MAAC All-Academic Team and MAAC Academic Honor Roll honors throughout her collegiate career, and has also been recognized multiple times as an Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar. She currently serves as the Vice President of Siena's Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC).
The Leo Dufort Student Athlete of the Month Award is presented nine times annually (September-May) throughout the academic year. The award recognizes exemplary achievements in both academics and athletics. The late Leo Dufort received a B.S. in marketing and management from Siena in August of 1977. His entire academic career was completed on a part-time basis beginning in the spring of 1961, as a married adult while at the same time raising five children. He passed away suddenly of a heart attack while cross country skiing in February of 1993. His wife Jeanine wanted to do something to immortalize his memory. The original plaque was donated to athletics and the department began the Leo Dufort Student Athlete of the Month Award to help carry out his legacy. Dufort graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1954 and was a Navy Veteran (USS Bennington) who worked for JL Hammett Co. at the time of his death.
